24 House Republicans break with leadership, vote with Democrats to pass chip bill

Source: ABC News

Another major legislative win for Democrats came Thursday, when -- over Republican objections of "corporate welfare" -- a bipartisan group in the House passed a bill that funds the nation’s science and technology industries with billions to boost domestic production of crucial semiconductor chips and additional research and development.

The bill cleared the chamber in a 243-187 vote (with one "present" vote) despite late-hour pushes from GOP leadership against the legislation. Twenty-four Republicans joined Democrats in backing the measure, which now heads to the White House for President Joe Biden's signature.

One lawmaker, Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., whose grandfather Irwin Jacobs founded semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm, voted "present."

“If you want to know who hates this bill, who lobbies against it -- the Chinese Communist Party. Why? Because they know it'll help us compete against them," Rep. Mike McCaul of Texas, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a major advocate of the package, told reporters while criticizing fellow Republicans for opposing the bill.

What I’m wondering is it less a compromise with Manchin, or more that Schumer backed him into a corner that left few options for the Dino?

We talk a lot about what a wily SOB McConnell is.

Love or hate Moscow Mitch, he is formidable.

Is Schumer as clever and ruthless as the Turtle?

Maybe those qualities are part of the job description if you are Leader.

I brought this up because of a picture I recently saw of Schumer’s face.

What I saw in his expression was the diabolical glint of a mind at work.

Gave me a grin it did.

against for the last few months? Nothing of substance as to what the bill is about in the ads, just that it would be bad for US tech innovation and other such nonsense.

Since Sinclair acquired the local channel a couple of years ago, the uptick in the volume of RW memes/bullshit has been pretty much non-stop.

From wiki:

“A 2019 study in the American Political Science Review found that "stations bought by Sinclair reduce coverage of local politics, increase national coverage and move the ideological tone of coverage in a conservative direction relative to other stations operating in the same market."

The company has been criticized by journalists and media analysts for requiring its stations to broadcast packaged video segments and its news anchors to read prepared scripts that contain pro-Trump editorial content, including warnings about purported "fake news" in mainstream media, while Trump has tweeted support for watching Sinclair over CNN and NBC.”

Good that it wasn't a deciding vote, since only Democrats even think like this.

She's quite liberal on the issues https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sara_Jacobs

If anyone was wondering, Bernie Sanders is the one Dem who voted against it in the Senate.

I have the highest respect for Rep. Jacobs for voting present because of ethics, and of course, she's a Democrat.
