Republicans mourn 'the day America died' and plot the path ahead

Source: LA Times

The morning after President Obama’s reelection, tea party activists and movement conservatives reacted with dejection, rage and considerable resolve — saying they just need a better national candidate and a purer distillation of their anti-tax, small-government message to win the presidency in 2016.

That did not inspire high hopes for compromise in Washington — where automatic tax increases and budget cuts loom even before Obama’s January inauguration. If there was one subject on which the political right made conciliatory noises, one day after Mitt Romney’s defeat, it was immigration. Republicans must think about the issue in new ways if they hope to expand their appeal among the growing Latino population.

Out in the land, though, some hard-core conservatives spared no hyberbole in expressing their anguish over Obama’s victory. The political blog for the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that a tea party group in Warren County, Ohio, sent an email Wednesday morning saying “the world mourns the loss of America. Socialists, welfare and unions took over this country yesterday. Today I wear black. The day America died.”

Not to be outdone, right-wing commentator John Stacy McCain (no relation to the U.S. senator from Arizona) fulminated at the “American Spectator” website in an essay entitled “Doomed Beyond All Hope of Redemption: Dark thoughts on the meaning of a catastrophic election.”

They really think their extremist message lost because it wasn't extreme enough. And had htey won, they would conclude it's a mandate to go even more extreme.

At the rate they're going the right will be batshit enough that the Democrats could run a cardboard box for president and they'd have to go annexing neighboring countries just to get enough electoral votes to express the scope of the landslides.

They have no intention of giving up.

They're mad they didn't get it all this time.

They'll cheat harder next time.

They'll eventually win unless the rest of us figure out that this IS civil war.

They are the enemy.

So are any 'bipartisans' out there.

The Tea Party should be politically ignored and bitchslapped every time they speak up. At the same time, they should be constantly monitored and neutered at every step towards anarchy or rebellion. This is a multi-headed snake that can't be killed. It must be tamed and held in check.

The smarter republicans, people like Colin Powell and Condi Rice (I'm no fan of hers by any stretch, but she does have some intelligence) will see the writing on the wall and will move to the Democratic party. Expect to see a sea change. Heck, I might imagine if there is more of an impasse in the House, that a number of level headed GOP congresscritters will switch party to get things moving in the right direction. Leave the die hards like Boehner and Cantor to wrangle with their crazy uncles from the Tea Party side, and bring in the moderates like... geez are there any?

they have to also defecate on it--yeah--that'll do the trick.

going harder in the paint clearly is not the answer--that's exactly what this country just rejected. The fact of the matter is: the tea party have been soundly, roundly and unequivocally rebuked in no uncertain terms. In two more years, the rest of that vermin will be swept out of the House and Senate.

those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. We made ourselves clear 4 years ago---we just made ourselves even more clear last night. WE will make ourselves way more clear in 2 years.

The world is beyond excited and relieved that we've re-elected the President. I understand that in that alternative universe in which delusion reigns supreme for these gits, it's hard to believe that the truth and the facts are not on their side, but... ... well, I'll just let my signature say the rest....

I mean, Bush won in 2004 in what was probably a closer election, yet he had a "mandate."

No, American didn't die. It's recovering from the 8-year coma it was in from 2001-2009. We have a ways to go and we really need to get on Obama's case re: civil rights, illegal, immoral drone attacks and secret kill lists, but I still feel like we've beaten back the forces of darkness for a little while. Except in NC, where they are alive and well.
