Pelosi stops in Hawaii and reveals her Asia plans. But no mention of Taiwan
Source: CNN
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is heading to Asia for a tour of the region after landing in Hawaii, where she visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the USS Arizona.
Pelosi is leading a Congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific and plans to visit places including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan, according to a statement released by her office on Sunday.
The statement made no mention of Taiwan, despite speculation in recent days that Pelosi might be planning to visit the self-governing democracy of 24 million people.
China's Communist Party, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory -- despite never having controlled it -- has warned against Pelosi visiting the island, and US President Joe Biden recently let slip that the US military thinks such a trip would be "not a good idea right now". However, US lawmakers on both sides of Washington's political divide have urged her to go.

The One China policy is total political fiction, sad that we support something so ridiculous.

(2,150 posts)What is the purpose of the trip?
Why were those countries chosen?
Who set the itinerary? Was it Pelosi herself, or someone else?
Who said she should visit Taiwan, anyway? For what reason, as compared to the purpose of her trip? What does Taiwan have to offer as compared to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan?

(8,020 posts)Any US citizen should be able to go anywhere in the World were they are invited. We built the greatest military in the World at YUGE cost, lets act like it. We have the cold war communist block bullying US again, I'm sick & tired of russia & china calling the shots. Bullies cannot be compromised with.

(59,504 posts)Weight in Pelosi's decision. Given her position, unless the military or diplomatic security could comfortably insure her safety, what goal is important enough to balance the risk?
Obviously the risk/benefit analysis allowed her and others to visit Ukraine.

At SOME POINT we must break our dependence on china. We MUST
And the EU needs to do the same.

since the British gave it back? The Peoples Republic has a rather vigorous intolerance for dissent and opposition.
Also, China has not controlled Taiwan in several generations, and theres 24 million Taiwanese whod really rather it stayed that way.

The DPP is strongly for Taiwan independence either de facto or de jure.

(36,132 posts)of course he knows what the hell she's doing, and of course she will be able to contact a liaison from Taiwan, our de facto US embassy there.
This is the crap people do when they don't know all the facts -- like with AG Garland and the DOJ for so long.
It's got to be pretty goddamn important for her to be heading to so many Asian countries. So don't FUD me, bro.

(17,025 posts)I'm really mixed up on which way is the best way to handle this. All i know for sure is IF she decides to visit Taiwan, we better be ready to make quick decisions, because if China decides to invade Taiwan, What will be our answer to that? If that happens, i feel the election will be all rethuglicon. We DO NOT need to chance this, at this time. There will be a BETTER time for this visit. We really got to use our best thinking here!
