U.S. Warns China Not to Turn Pelosi's Expected Trip to Taiwan Into a 'Crisis'
Source: NY Times
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a longtime China hawk, has not confirmed that she plans to visit Taiwan, but all indications suggest that she will make a stop on the self-governing island without prior announcement.

WASHINGTON The United States warned China on Monday not to respond to an expected trip to Taiwan by Speaker Nancy Pelosi with military provocations even as American officials sought to reassure Beijing that such a visit would not be the first of its kind nor represent any change in policy toward the region.
With tensions rising on the eve of Ms. Pelosis anticipated arrival in Taipei, the White House said it was concerned that China might fire missiles into the Taiwan Strait, send warplanes into Taiwans air defense zone or stage large-scale naval or air activities that cross traditional lines.
There is no reason for Beijing to turn a potential visit consistent with longstanding U.S. policy into some sort of crisis or conflict, or use it as a pretext to increase aggressive military activity in or around the Taiwan Strait, John F. Kirby, a National Security Council spokesman, told reporters. Meanwhile, he added, our actions are not threatening and they break no new ground. Nothing about this potential visit potential visit, which oh, by the way, has precedent would change the status quo.
But Beijing made clear it was not reassured. We would like to tell the United States once again that China is standing by, the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army will never sit idly by, and China will take resolute responses and strong countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Zhao Lijian, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, told reporters. As for what measures, if she dares to go, then lets wait and see.

(95,257 posts)The situation is what it is, what China knows it is, and it is not going to be changed in the slightest by the lady's visit.
An invasion of Taiwan by China will be the ruin of the force dispatched. It will not occur. This is just noise, a paper tiger yapping.

(12,449 posts)China has no right to tell any US politician where they can or cannot go, if we allow this just once, then it will embolden them the next time a US politician wants to visit Taiwan.
Plus, there is nothing new here, US pols. have been visiting Taiwan for years, so China can go pound sand.

(5,789 posts)The PLA is a paper tiger. China is all bluster and no real action except against unarmed people. That's usually how a despot looking for lifelong power like Emperor Xi the Flawless wants.
Their housing bubble burst. . .their economy is in the tank, people are starting runs on banks, and a war is a good way to distract people from their lives.
If Xi truly wanted to invade Taiwan, he would have years ago. Taiwan as is right now is too good of a distraction.

(12,449 posts)that's what I love about DU, we may have differing opinions, but we all want the same thing, just differing opinions of how to get there.
Have a great Tuesday.

(45,120 posts)as he and the military suggested. if it's her vacation and she's paying for it then she can go where she wishes. You have a nice day too.
Its called Co-Equal Branches of Government, and the Speaker of the House does not report to the President.
