(CNN)Trump ally Doug Mastriano's virtual appearance Tuesday before the House January 6 committee only lasted about 15 minutes and "he didn't answer a single question," according to a source familiar with the matter.
Mastriano's attorney cut off the virtual appearance soon after it began, the source said. His lawyer, Tim Parlatore, took issue with several procedural matters related to the deposition, and raised questions about the legality of the subpoena that Mastriano received from the panel, the source added.
"We were there for 15 minutes. It was clear that the committee was unable to comply with the regulations regarding use of deposition authority and moreover has no interest in complying with the regulations," Parlatore said. "We're happy to provide the information if they can either do it fairly and legally or if we can reach a resolution on how to do a voluntary interview which minimizes the risk of election interference."
Mastriano is the GOP gubernatorial nominee in Pennsylvania, and was a central player supporting former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Mastriano was also among the mob of Trump supporters on Capitol grounds on January 6, 2021, during the insurrection, though he didn't go into the Capitol itself and hasn't been charged with any crimes..................

MAGA candidate for Pennsylvania Governor, Doug Mastriano, couldn't even plead the fifth, instead, he just panicked & ran from his Jan. 6th committee interview after less than 15 minutes.
For such a strong group of men, they sure seem pretty fucking weak to me.

(22,037 posts)Mastriano showed his true colors. He's a coward and afraid of his own convictions.
Pennsylvania will be better off when he loses in November.

(2,529 posts)Calling the legality/legitimacy of the interview into question without any comment from the committee ensures his constituents remain ignorant of why he was even called in.
They'll remain convinced it's a witch hunt managed by the deep state to ensure the new world order remains intact.
That and they're morons...

(714 posts)"Being on the Capitol grounds" was a crime on Jan 6th. If he's admitted to that, he should be convicted rather than running for office. It's a misdemeanor offense with up to six months' imprisonment and a $5,000 fine.
Since the insurrectionists were ordered to disperse by the Capitol police yet remained and impeded their ability to move around the grounds and do their jobs, that's another misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year's imprisonment and a $300 fine.
If the Justice Department took their jobs seriously and prosecuted everyone who they knew broke the law as part of the insurrection that day, it'd be much less likely that another insurrection would happen in the future.
Letting people who admit they're guilty off without even having to go through a trail does nothing except encourage the next group of idiots to do the same thing.
The problem wasn't the violence. The problem was that the people showed up in a place where they weren't legally permitted to be for the purpose of insurrection.
The people who just went along are just as much part of the problem as those who committed the violence. And it should be treated as such when it comes to prosecutorial discretion, in my opinion.

(527 posts)Since the days of the law breaking GW Bush administration we have been hearing 'why are you worried if you didn't do anything wrong you have nothing to worry about'. And lest not forget trump who said "You see the mob takes the Fifth, he said. If youre innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?" Now that the shoe is on the other foot they are quite and pleading the 5th, it's almost like they broke the law or something.
