JERUSALEM (AP) A Palestinian gunman opened fire at a bus near Jerusalems Old City early Sunday, wounding eight Israelis in an attack that came a week after violence flared up between Israel and militants in Gaza, police and medics said.
Two of the victims were in serious condition, including a pregnant woman with abdominal injuries and a man with gunshot wounds to the head and neck, according to Israeli hospitals treating them.
The U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Tom Nides, tweeted that there were American citizens among the wounded. An embassy spokesperson disclosed no other information or details.
The shooting happened as the bus waited in a parking lot near Davids Tomb on Mount Zion, just outside the Old City walls. Israeli media identified the suspected attacker as a 26-year-old Palestinian from east Jerusalem.

(487 posts)If you don't address the why, you are just begging for this scenario to repeat itself. It's like dismissing every case of gun violence in the U.S. as just the act of monsters, so why consider the underlying factors that drove them to act.
Whether you agree with Israel's actions or not, it isn't hard to see that there are many factors at play here. If you see yourself as having no other recourse and are in a state of despair, making the leap to violence may be an increasingly more tempting option. The far right militias in the States may seem crazy and utterly out of touch with reality, but many of them genuinely believe what they are saying. If you don't address the propaganda, the disinformation, the culture of violence that forms the basis of much of U.S. history, you are only treating a symptom and not the disease.

As to the Palestinians in Gaza, I've seen they STILL put on kids' TV shows calling for "martyrs" to attack Jews, and take money and supplies to build more terrorist weapons like those rockets and incendiary balloons.

That doesn't sound like propping up Russia. Amnesty may have been wrong to criticize Ukraine for how and where they set up their forces, but that is not the same as cheerleading for Putin.
Pointing out wrongs on one side doesn't excuse the other from it's abuses. It's a common bias to assume that if one side is bad, the other must be good. It's a black and white world view that ignores the fact that Israel is facing legitimate criticism for it's treatment of Gaza and the West Bank.

(46,327 posts)The problem is there are too many activists and even governments willing to always condemn Israel, while always letting Palestinians off the hook.

(487 posts)Israel's hold on that region is effectively iron clad. HAMAS, for all it's bluster, can't really make a tiny dent in that. No air force, no armored division, no formal army, etc., etc., and a collection of missiles as likely to fall on their own heads as Israel's (this is actually true as multiple Palestinians have been killed by HAMAS's unreliable tech). So while HAMAS undoubtedly exploits the situation for power and influence, as far as that goes, the danger they represent is miniscule when compared to the overwhelming might of the Israeli army. It may be a gamble, and there is certainly no guarantee of success, but Israel, by lifting the economic blockade on Gaza and halting settlements in the West Bank, stands a much better chance to affect change. I imagine the removal of HAMAS from power, or finding some way to mitigate their influence, would be a necessary and difficult hurdle to clear,
