MAYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) Salman Rushdie is on the road to recovery, his agent confirmed Sunday, two days after the author of The Satanic Verses suffered serious injuries in a stabbing at a lecture in New York.
The announcement followed news that the lauded writer was removed from a ventilator Saturday and able to talk. Literary agent Andrew Wylie cautioned that although Rushdies condition is headed in the right direction, his recovery would be long. Rushdie, 75, suffered a damaged liver and severed nerves in an arm and in an eye that he was likely to lose, Wylie had previously said.
Though his life changing injuries are severe, his usual feisty & defiant sense of humour remains intact, Rushdies son Zafar Rushdie said in a Sunday statement that stressed the author remained in critical condition. The family statement also expressed gratitude for the audience members who bravely leapt to his defence, as well as police, doctors and the outpouring of love and support.
Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey, pleaded not guilty Saturday to attempted murder and assault charges in what a prosecutor called a targeted, unprovoked, preplanned attack at western New Yorks Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit education and retreat center.

So relieved he's doing better but it sounds like he has a long hard road ahead of him. I've been worried about this since Khomeini issued that fatwa in 1989.

(26,501 posts)powerful!...... except for all these things he somehow needs 'a bug' like me to take care of for him. If you're that secure in your being's power. Wouldn't these acts be an insult to said entity? Like they're impotent or something?

I've just never understood it. I guess taking over god's job makes these bozos feel somehow godlike, themselves. Or something.
Or maybe they're just murderous sociopaths who think a pious excuse will get them off the legal hook.

(111,261 posts)I think it's "get smitten," although since I dislike the verb, I usually say "get smote" or even "done got smote," going back to roots I'd really rather forget.

(10,170 posts)I don't need my kids to bow down and pray to me. I love them and care for them. And any respect I get is earned. I don't need my employees to praise my name, and I pay them more than god does. I just need them to do their job. Keep your worship.
This all powerful being hasn't earned my respect. Most everything I got, I worked hard and long for. And my parents gave me life....so how come a super powerful being needs my worship?
It's such a bizarre concept. Do we worship anything else in our lives? Money? Where did this mandatory worship originate from? Feudalism?

If he doesn't already have one, I do hope that when speaks in public, he uses a security detail from now on.
Keep on trucking Mr. Rushdie

(6,034 posts)I can't think of a better way on how to give the middle finger to the extremis. It will also send a message to the Ayatollah down in hell, if you believe in that kind of thing. I don't, but on days where a writer is attacked at an event celebrating free expression I wish I did.

(7,528 posts)A little bit ridiculous when this occurred at a public event with what looked to be around 100 witnesses? I guess so the perp can have their story heard...
I would suppose it's 2nd degree because 1st degree would require full premeditation and I think 2nd degree can be an unpremeditated "act of passion"?
