Rep. Adam Schiff said the seizure of Rep. Scott Perry's phone suggests the Justice Department thinks Trump team's alternate electors plot was a crime

................
..................
Perry called the seizure an "abuse of power" on Fox News Sunday.
...............................
The DOJ is investigating Republican efforts to overturn the 2020 election and Rep. Scott Perry, an ally of former President Donald Trump, is apparently a key figure in the probe.
Perry's phone was seized on Tuesday and several lawmakers in Pennsylvania have been subpoenaed by the FBI looking for information on the Pennsylvania Republican.
The California congressman called the confiscation "striking" because "probable cause" of Perry committing a crime would have to have been established.
......................................
"And that also suggests the Department thinks that this fake elector plot was a violation of law, which I think it certainly was. So, I think it's very significant. All those respects," he added.
....................................
Perry has said he introduced Trump to Jeffrey Clark, a Justice Department official who believed the election was inaccurate. The January 6 House Select Committee found that Clark, who Trump tried to place as attorney general, penned a draft of an unsent letter to officials in six states suggesting they select alternate electors.

Hoping that Schiff is right.
Thinking a lot about Adam Schiffs words this week:
He has betrayed our national security, and he will do so again You cannot constrain him. He is who he is. Truth matters little to him. Whats right matters even less, and decency matters not at all.

(503 posts)I think the reason so many republicans are defending Trump is because the truth is getting closer. We know they cheated in the last election I think they cheated in the election that Trump won and got away with it. I think they hired the russians to inject propaganda into our elections and accepted illegal campaign funds from the Russians. This whole Ukraine war would not have happened if Trump lost that election. Fuckin traitors.

(15,222 posts)Ive always felt that something just wasnt right about Trumps win in 2016. Anyone with any sense at all would question it.
The truth needs to come out. If that means civil war, then bring it. I am tired of anything less than the truth.

(5,519 posts)These alternate (fake) electors all signed faked documents declaring themselves falsely to be actual electors. They should all be in jail for the fraud they intended to perpetrate on the US.

Flynn was prepping to sell nuke secrets to ????
Had to be. Doturd couldn't tell a nuke warhead from a turd in his clogged toilet.
But Flynn, and others like him, (who had the ability to READ) surely knew EXACTLY what was taken and it's value.

(5,844 posts)Has he admitted he was wrong?
I respect the hell out of Adam Schiff, but his comments went too far. His words carry weight, and so many people were amplifying him when he expressed doubts about the DOJ. I would like him to admit he was wrong.
People need to be careful what they pass on. A lot of it may not be accurate but people want to believe their own biases - it's called confirmation bias - and that's how misinformation gets circulated.
From where I sit, the DOJ looks to be doing exactly what they need to be doing. Could they be doing more? That's not my call. It's possible that they are, but behind the scenes.

(7,284 posts)It is not clear at all that Schiff was 'wrong' per se. It was always likely the DOJ was doing more.. but to what extent was definitely in question. The seizure of the classified security documents a year and half after the fact, when it was known Trump took them when leaving the white house risked the obvious.
He had all that time to sell/trade for financial purposes national security codes/products to Russia, Saudies, China etc I expect the full damage will never be revealed, but the risk/damage assessment report will likely be somewhat revealing when that occurs. We'll be in the dark about the worst of it, cuz that's how it always works.
And in the meantime, that thug remains free to grift and campaign for 2024. And his cult followers remain able and willing to support him. I believe Schiff "knows some things ", and I trust his perspective given his bonafides.

(5,844 posts)... casting doubts on the DOJ. I don't think it's appropriate for a congressperson to do, especially when we're ostensibly on the same side.
I agree with you that it took the FBI way too long to obtain these materials and I still don't understand how they didn't take the materials in June when they were identified in an unsecured basement.
Unless.
Unless they planned to obtain security footage to see who was accessing them? Unless they didn't really understand what was in the boxes until now?
I dunno, but I would like to hear an explanation why the FBI didn't immediately go in to confiscate the materials. They know damned well that subpoenas mean nothing to the orange fuck.

(7,284 posts)And I understand the consternation of calling out the DOJ publicly, (my words). In that respect, I feel like Schiff could be forgiven for speaking out of school in light of the serious threat to which that thug's treasonous motives hangs over our nation and with every passing moment he is free to trade on our national sedurity information he has had in his possession all this time.
Schiff said this recently and I believe I recall the same words in his closing Impeachment Trial arguments:
He has betrayed our national security, and he will do so again
You cannot constrain him. He is who he is. Truth matters little to him. Whats right matters even less, and decency matters not at all.
The enormority and weight of responsibility in the DOJ's remit is quite possibly the most extreme in our nation's history.
I do have empathy for the department's burden of pressure they're carrying. It is matched with the extraordinary circumstances which that burden is dealing with.

(5,844 posts)We've seen it proven over and over again. We knew he was right then, and he is still right.
I really respect Schiff and I was surprised to hear his public criticism of the DOJ. But I allow for the possibility that since he carries so much gravitas, it's possible he used his criticism to prod the DOJ to be a little more forthcoming with what they are doing. We've seen from Garland's public remarks last week that the public is hungry to hear from him. And not just the same old platitudes.

(7,284 posts)much we will never be privy to.. I had presumed Schiff to be in possession of some extraordinary and vital information/evidence shared with the DOJ, which appeared to him to be ignored or not acted on in a timely matter.
That was my take from the onset of those public remarks/critisism. The reason I give him the benefit of the doubt in this area, is because in my view, he was always exceedingly discreet in what exactly he revealed and that which was kept close to his chest during the Russian investigation.
But again, it hurts to see our peeps criticizing our President's DOJ guy and though I cringed, I feel like I know Schiff's motives and intentions well enough to view this as an issue that had to be supported regardless of the thorny optics of publically calling the dept out.
At this moment, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. So much riding on putting this sociopath and his henchmen behind bars for a good long time.
May eventually be reealed in a book after some years go by.
