Kansas recount confirms results in favor of abortion rights
Source: Associated Press
OLATHE, Kan. (AP) A decisive statewide vote in favor of abortion rights in traditionally conservative Kansas was confirmed with a partial hand recount, with fewer than 100 votes changing after the last county reported results Sunday.
Nine of the states 105 counties recounted their votes at the request of Melissa Leavitt, who has pushed for tighter election laws. A longtime anti-abortion activist, Mark Gietzen, is covering most of the costs. Gietzen acknowledged in an interview that it was unlikely to change the outcome.
A no vote in the referendum signaled a desire to keep existing abortion protections and a yes vote was for allowing the Legislature to tighten restrictions or ban abortion. After the recounts, no votes lost 87 votes and yes gained 6 votes.
Eight of the counties reported their results by the states Saturday deadline, but Sedgwick County delayed releasing its final count until Sunday because spokeswoman Nicole Gibbs said some of the ballots werent separated into the correct precincts during the initial recount and had to be resorted Saturday. She said the number of votes cast overall didnt change.

There was a recount? Seriously? When one side got nearly 60 percent of the vote?
Kansas already has a scarce enough amount of taxpayer dollars. Some "fiscal conservatism".

(37,122 posts)Dumbass conservatives who had concerns about the voting process trying to convince other dumbass conservatives that there is something wrong with how we count votes and that will continue into future elections they lose.
Meanwhile the Catholic Crime Family still maintains its tax exempt status.

(6,622 posts)Very strict Catholic. So much so, that Dad gave them 10% of his paycheck every week. Our car was held together with gum and duct tape, but the Priests in our parish always drove the latest models. Grrr. (Kidding about the gum and tape but you get my drift.)
4 kids in my family, all went to Catholic school K-12. One of my brothers studied for the priesthood but dropped it - he's currently on his third wife.
BTW, Dad was born and raised in Cicero Illinois and knew the infamous Paul Marcinkus (also from Cicero). When I was a small child, Marcinkus happened to be back at his old parish in Chicago for a few days and we visited him. He reminded me of a tv mobster - big, loud, and creepy. I can honestly believe all the nasty rumors about the guy.

(1,040 posts)I was unbelievably angry on behalf of our local election commission here in Johnson County. They run an extremely tight ship and I marvel at the efficiency and accuracy with which they administer the voting process. But not only do that they have to put up with these morons, they are also dealing with our local sheriff, Calvin Hayden, who belongs to the group of sheriffs who think the 2020 election was stolen and that he as sheriff can supervise (interfere) with the election process. The JoCo Election Commissioner told him in no uncertain terms to MYOB.
The yahoos who requested the recount, when told what a statewide recount would cost, cut it down to only 9 counties paid for the recount (if reports are accurate) via credit card. One of the counties they picked, Douglas County right next door to us where Lawrence and The University of Kansas are located (very blue), voted 'NO' in the 80% range. Yet they recounted them. Boggles the mind.
What kind of insanity makes a person willingly shell out that kind of money when they know with 100% certainty that they are going to lose? Is roiling up the base worth the $120,000 this cost them??? Oh and get this -- if the county underestimated the cost of the recount guess who pays anything over and above the $120k? You guessed it -- the taxpayers.
Somebody 'splain it to me cause I just can't grasp their logic (or lack of same).

(37,122 posts)To have all losers believe that when they lose elections there must be something wrong. I will guess that radical dark money will eventually pick up the tab. Imagine if those Christians spent as much energy expanding Medicaid and doing Ya know, like Christian stuff.

(1,671 posts)Frivolous recounts like this should have to pay at re-bill rate plus 50%. You want to waste resources, fine, but the jurisdictions should be getting enough to hire extra staff and infrastructure to cover normal business and pay the workers at reasonable rates. And if they have to rent space, I hope the landlords get compensated well. Im tired of seeing conservatives having their lifestyle and mental health issues subsidized during actual housing and mental health crises.
