Former impeachment counsel wins crowded Democratic primary in New York's 10th District

Source: The Hill

Dan Goldman, an attorney who served as the lead counsel in the first impeachment trial against former President Trump, is projected to win the Democratic primary in New York’s 10th Congressional District.

The Associated Press called the race at 12:39 a.m. Wednesday.
Goldman was among a dozen candidates seeking the Democratic nod in the New York House district.

Other Democrats vying for seat included Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.), who represents the 17th Congressional District but ran in the 10th to avoid a primary fight with another member of Congress; New York state Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou, New York City Council Member Carlina Rivera and former New York City Comptroller Liz Holtzman.

Goldman, a Levi Strauss & Co. heir, poured millions of dollars into his election bid, and he had received a coveted endorsement from The New York Times editorial board. Some candidates sought to portray the former federal prosecutor as attempting to “purchase” his seat and not being liberal enough for their party.

As a supporter of the relatively progressive wing of the Democratic Party, it is dismaying to see this deeply progressive district lost by a splintering of the vote among some really great candidates -- such as Mondaire Jones and Yuh-Line Niou.

There was some really interesting commentary on the NY Times' endorsement of Goldman Tues morning on "Democracy Now"

Here's some of the commentary from "Democracy Now":

AMY GOODMAN:
Well, The New York Times drew scrutiny when it endorsed Dan Goldman without noting it was making an exception to its usual disdain for self-funded candidates or that the publisher of the Times, A.G. Sulzberger, lives in New York 10, has family ties to the Goldmans and did not recuse himself from the endorsement process. This prompted a rare news conference last week, where rival progressive candidates Yuh-Line Niou and Mondaire Jones joined together to speak out against Dan Goldman.

...

AMY GOODMAN: So, you co-authored this piece, Alex, “New York Times Faces Backlash Over Dan Goldman Endorsement Debacle,” New York Times endorsing three white men in a very diverse primary race: Sean Patrick Maloney and Jerry Nadler and Dan Goldman. Can you talk about Dan Goldman and the person right up against him, Mondaire Jones, the significance of — Yuh-Line Niou, as well — the significance of the Times not revealing the close ties of the publisher to the Goldman family?

ALEX SAMMON: ...

And the race, in particular, in 10 is fascinating, because — right? — the endorsement, if you read it, speaks glowingly of Mondaire Jones. If you read it without knowing who they were going to endorse, you would assume at the very least that Jones would be receiving a co-endorsement. But it ends up, you know, endorsing — they end up endorsing Goldman. And of the six candidates that I mentioned, Goldman is the only one who isn’t and hasn’t held elected office. He’s the white man in the race. This is a majority minority district. It’s New York City’s most diverse. And they don’t even mention two of the four, really, of the front-runners even of that six. Yuh-Line Niou and Carlina Rivera don’t even get mentioned in the text of the endorsement. So, those things are, you know, very peculiar.

And then, to add on top of that, the fact that the publisher didn’t disclose his close ties to — the Sulzberger family and the Goldman family have ties going back decades. That’s not disclosed. He didn’t recuse himself from the endorsement process. And the fact that the Times editorial board, ultimately, in the statement that we were given, said that, you know, the editorial board answers to the public here, and these endorsements —

===================================================================

I suppose the whole issue of whether the Working Families Party will run one of the progressives (Niou has been talked about) in the general is a very touchy one here on Democratic Underground, but it has real implications for the internal politics of the Democratic Party

Yes, technically they can run a candidate, but realistically, Goldman will have the seat as long as he wants it.

Case in point. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries was challenged by Queen Johnson, a DSA candidate in NY-8. He won back his seat 88-12.

NYC is heavily Democratic. It is NOT heavily left-wing.

using the excuse that it was because The NY Times endorsement, was only because he was a man.

From Niou’s anti-BDS comments, to Jones, throwing out that Goldman was a “Levi Strauss heir.”, it almost sounds like the refrain from right wing sources bringing up their “code word”, Soros

Gee, I guess when the NY Times endorsed Hillary in 2016 over trump, some in the liberal wing thought compelled to embrace Jill Stein back then, would like to forget about that

I stopped listening to Amy Goodman many years ago. Identity politics to the extreme has been in her go-to-grab-bag of political "analysis" since forever, and I don;t understand how it is folks on the left is more than happy to dispose our own down the rubbish heap as if everything was "normal". It isn't, and it hasn't been in years. I wish she'd recognize it but she doesn't give a damn.

As a leftist myself and an admirer of Goldman's BRILLIANT performance during the impeachment hearings and Trials, this Californian progressive is mighty pleased Goldman won out.

Identity politics should never, EVER outweigh much needed skill sets which clearly any potential lawmaker should have, and which Goldman possesses by the power of 10,000. IMHO.

because our community is Democratic and we support Democrats in general elections.

While Niou talks the ostensibly progressive talk when it comes to BDS and defunding the police, some of her current constituents might question whether she truly walks the walk when it comes to embracing and advancing liberal values.

Imagine trying to shame him for being a descendant of Levi Strauss.

Who Was Levi Strauss?

Levi’s journey begins in 1847 when he and his family left their hometown of Buttenheim, Bavaria in search of freedom from the anti-Semitism plaguing the Jewish community throughout much of Europe.

Like countless immigrants arriving in the U.S., Levi changed his name when he became a citizen (from Löb to Levi), but he remained deeply connected to his roots, and was a major participant in the formation of San Francisco’s Jewish community and culture.

In California, Levi quickly took advantage of the business opportunities brought on by the gold rush, and struck (blue) gold when he partnered with tailor Jacob Davis to patent the riveted waist overall—and thus, an American style icon was born.

============================================================

Levi Strauss was born in an Ashkenazi Jewish family in Buttenheim on February 26, 1829, in the Franconia region of the Kingdom of Bavaria in the German Confederation. He was the son of Hirsch Strauss and his second wife Rebecca Strauss (née Haas).

In 1847, aged 18, Strauss travelled with his mother and two sisters to the United States to join his brothers Jonas and Louis, who had begun a wholesale dry goods business in New York City called J. Strauss Brother & Co., at 108 Liberty Street in Manhattan. After arriving in New York, Strauss worked as an itinerant peddler of goods from his brother's store: kettles, blankets and sewing goods.

snip======================================

The family decided to open a West Coast branch of their dry goods business in San Francisco, which was the commercial hub of the California Gold Rush. Levi was chosen to represent them, and he took a steamship for San Francisco, where he arrived in early March 1854 and joined his sister's family.

Strauss opened his wholesale business as Levi Strauss & Co. and imported fine dry goods from his brothers in New York, including clothing, bedding, combs, purses, and handkerchiefs. He made tents and later jeans while he lived with Fanny's growing family. Jacob W. Davis was one of his customers and the inventor of riveted denim pants, and in 1871, he went into business with Strauss to produce blue jeans. The two men patented the new style of work pants in 1873.

snip======================================

Levi Strauss, a member of the Reform branch of Judaism, helped establish Congregation Emanu-El, the first Jewish synagogue in the city of San Francisco.[16] He also gave money to several charities, including special funds for orphans. The Levi Strauss Foundation started with an 1897 donation to the University of California, Berkeley, that provided the funds for 28 scholarships

he was ethical, honest and fair. He treated his workers well back when there were little to no protections and gave back to his community.

Strauss came to America to escape the virulent antisemitic laws that limited work opportunities for German Jews, worked extremely hard to succeed, and afforded his employees the chance to do the same.

That fact that one of his descendants was targeted in the way Dan Goldman was is frankly disgusting.

I've seen every TV ad, every flyer, every debate and every social media discussion. Goldman was attacked for "buying" the election with his wealth, or earning his wealth through socially irresponsible stock. None of that had to do with religion. It had to do with money. Think about how many "criticize the 1%" threads you read here. Same thing.

NY-10's fortunate to have had more candidates of decent caliber than most districts, but Goldman combines strong progressive liberal ideals and a commitment to our democracy that unfortunately not all candidates match with, especially, proven, exceptional ability.

Here in GA our stunningly unfit slimeball rep has been reelected in spite of constantly failing to "earn" a spot in MT Greene's spotlight, but I feel good knowing Goldman's going to congress.
