First on CNN: Jill Biden tests positive for rebound case of Covid-19
Source: CNN
(CNN) First lady Dr. Jill Biden has tested positive for a rebound case of Covid-19, her deputy communications director Kelsey Donohue confirmed to CNN.
Biden, who is currently in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, tested positive again for Covid-19 with an antigen test on Wednesday. She tested negative during a routine test on Tuesday. Donohue says the first lady has not had a reemergence of symptoms. She added that a "small number of close contacts" with whom Biden had recent contact have been notified.
Biden first tested positive on August 15 while vacationing in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. The first lady had "cold-like symptoms," according to Alexander, and was put on a cycle of the antiviral drug Paxlovid, which can trigger a rebound case of Covid-19 in some people several days after a negative test result.
Biden had two consecutive negative tests on Sunday and traveled from South Carolina to join President Joe Biden in Delaware. President Biden tested negative Wednesday, a White House official told CNN. Following US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, the President will mask for 10 days indoors because he is considered a close contact, the official said.

I hope they will stop saying it's "rare" to have a rebound from Paxlovid. The drug works as advertised but the continual overly-definitive declarations are tiresome. I expect many others who have taken it have had the same but they are not public figures and don't make the news.
Hopefully she will clear the virus quickly!

(4,993 posts)said that this is a common occurrence (north of 20%) with Paxlovid which is why, in his opinion, the ONLY people who should get Paxlovid are people multiple underlying conditions.

(1,527 posts)It sounds like it is just a positive on the test. I have never heard of any other symptoms coming back later.
Any real information on this?

(129,053 posts)Poor Dr. Fauci got walloped worse with the rebound!
By Carolyn Crist
June 30, 2022 Anthony Fauci, MD, the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, said Tuesday that he went through a Paxlovid rebound that can occur after taking the antiviral to recover from COVID-19.
The symptoms that he had after he completed the treatment were more severe than those he had at first from the coronavirus, he said. After I finished the 5 days of Paxlovid, I reverted to negative on an antigen test for 3 days in a row, Fauci said during Foreign Policys Global Health Forum event.
And then on the fourth day, just to be absolutely certain, I tested myself again, he said. I reverted back to positive. Fauci then began a second course of Paxlovid when symptoms returned, which were much worse than the first go-around, he said. During Tuesdays event, he said he was feeling reasonably good.
He later said that Paxlovid kept him out of the hospital and stopped his infection from becoming more severe when he first tested positive on June 15. Paxlovid did what it was supposed to do, he told The New York Times.

So I expect it's a YMMV type of thing.

(11,830 posts)the end of June, told my doctor, and he suggested Paxlovid. I was almost over it by that time so said no.

(514 posts)I took it for 5 days. It made me so sick I fainted one morning. Then I was negative for 2 days. Then I rebounded and had COVID for another week with worse symptoms than the first time. My husband took Lagevrio and got well in about a week. No rebound.

(9,998 posts)When they said she tested negative, and then immediately took off for Delaware, I figured within a few days, she'd test positive again.
The new guidelines Suck. Any cases involving Paxlovid should maintain a full 10 day quarantine, and not just think an all clear after 5 days is sufficient.

(15,220 posts)Except one person. I took it and rebounded.
The person who did NOT rebound started Paxlovid a little later in her disease process, and that makes me wonder if that has something to do with her not rebounding. She was initially testing negative and her doctor diagnosed bronchitis. She tested positive two days later and started Paxlovid.
Most people, myself included, started it at the onset of symptoms.
