..............It's no secret that many voters found Oz's campaign to be questionable at best. He lost more respect when his team chose to take aim at his political rival, John Fetterman, who had a stroke and has recently returned to the campaign trail (per CNN). Oz's spokeswoman Rachel Tripp stated, "If John Fetterman had ever eaten a vegetable in his life, then maybe he wouldn't have had a major stroke and wouldn't be in the position of having to lie about it constantly."
Just a few days after that scandal, Oz found himself in yet another tough spot in the media.
Dr. Oz Made Shocking Suggestions During The Early Days Of The COVID-19 Pandemic
Emails between Dr. Mehmet Oz and former President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior White House advisor, Jared Kushner, have been made public, and the conversation that ensued is raising eyebrows. According to Insider, the Select House Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis unearthed the emails and made them public.
The messages in question were sent by Oz, who was adamant about prescribing hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 though there were no trials or proof that the drug was a treatment option for the virus. "We cannot hide behind study protocols if we are not allowed to proceed," Oz said to Kushner (via Insider). "I want to push brave Americans to join trials on my show tomorrow, but cannot without a game plan for accessing drugs," adding that he would recruit patients for the trials and pay for it himself. Hydroxychloroquine is a treatment for malaria.
The findings were issued in a report that claims Trump and his administration interfered with the FDA during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic by endorsing vaccines and treatments that were unproven to remedy the virus. Oz was at the center of the push for experimental drugs like hydroxychloroquine, the committee reports (per The Philadelphia Inquirer).................................

TFG got intel briefings prob in dec 2019 that covid was coming and worst case scenarios involved millions dead, state of emergency, cancelled elections, and he loved it, went for it, and told limbaugh to call it a hoax, like the flu. meanwhile they were spitballing how to make money off it and OZ was perfect for the job.

(1,850 posts)Although I was on it a very short period of time, about 15 years ago. I started to have various symptoms, which my rheumatologist said was not being caused by that medication.
I stopped taking it, symptoms went away, stopped seeing that doctor too.
My friend started it last year, for lupus, and had all sorts of tests before they prescribed it.
She tolerated it well. She calls it tRump's drug. Easier to say. We laugh about it.

(5,803 posts)I gotta admit, I cut Oz some slack on at least some of the dietary recommendations, e.g. eat more plant-based foods, because I think there is a scientific body of evidence supporting such advice (although I've never seen his show so don't know how the advice is presented) but this is beyond the pale. Clear evidence he's a quack.
Bet these emails weren't mentioned in Jared's new book (read the reviews from major newspapers; they're hilarious).

Here's an article that enumerates some instances of his quackery:

(36,949 posts)Politics makes strange bedfellows.
Oz (Muslim) cooperates with Jared (Jew).
Jared had/has an open door policy with the Saudis.
Most of the Trump/MAGA/right wing crowd are not very fond of either religion.
Super Christian Doug Mastriano spoke out against Jews but seems to be holding back on fellow Trumpster Oz.
Trump had to tell Breitbart to knock off Jared's Jewishness.

The Trump administrations pressure on the FDA was also widely publicized in 2020. But the report from the panel, chaired by U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat, goes into far greater detail, describing a White House push to investigate agency commissioner Stephen Hahn and Anthony Fauci, the infectious-disease chief for the National Institutes of Health. (Republicans renewed calls to investigate Fauci when he announced this month that he would step down in December).
The FDA authorized hydroxychloroquine for emergency use on March 28, 2020, six days after Ozs first email to the White House only to revoke that authorization less than three months later, citing a lack of evidence that it worked and a slight risk of side effects, such as an irregular heart rhythm. Yet through the summer and early fall, senior Trump administration officials pushed agency officials to reauthorize the drug, emails and records show.

(20,220 posts)The way that hydroxychloroquine works for people with Lupus and other autoimmune diseases is that it suppresses the immune system. In some COVID-19 patients, their immune system overeacts and starts attacking healthy tissues - an autoimmune response. But that doesn't happen with all or even most COVID-19 patients.
The thing is, ideally, you want the immune system response to be robust. That's the point of vaccines; to get the body to create antibodies to attack the virus. So for the run of the mill COVID-19 patient, the last thing you want to do is weaken the immune system response. That's why the first line of attack are antivirals like Paxlovid and Remdesivir.
It's ONLY if the patients' immune system goes into overdrive that immunosuppressive drugs are appropriate. Then, and only then, are immunosuppressive drugs are appropriate. Since hydroxychloroquine can damage the heart and retinas, it isn't the first drug of choice, and it should NEVER be taken to PREVENT COVID-19.
