California fire fight persists as many neighborhoods reopen

WEED, Calif. (AP) About 1,000 people in the rural Northern California community of Weed were still being kept from their homes Sunday as firefighters worked to contain a blaze that had sparked out of control at the start of the holiday weekend.
Power outages, smoky skies and uncertainty about what the day would bring left a feeling of emptiness around the town the morning after evacuation orders were lifted for thousands of other residents.
Its eerily quiet, said Susan Tavalero, a Weed city councilor, who was driving to a meeting with fire officials.
She was joined by Mayor Kim Greene, and the two hoped to get more details on how many homes had been lost. A total of 132 structures were destroyed or damaged, fire officials said Sunday, though it wasnt clear whether they were homes, businesses, or other buildings.

(1,288 posts)One of my best friends, Karen, has been a family friend for nearly 50 years. She and her husband, Mark, live in Weed. I heard about the fire too late to call her last night, so I texted. I heard back from her this morning. They evacuated with their four dogs and are now camping in their trailer at a friend's ranch. It's got to be a tremendous hardship, as Mark has mesothelioma and other body-wrecking diseases. Karen is a tough woman and can handle a hell of a lot. Still, the burden must be tremendous.
Karen shared the good news out of this: the fire was stopped a couple of miles south and east of their house.
I live in Orange Co., CA. I've been around fire-season fires all my life, and the only effect it's had on my life, besides anger and worry, is that I'm used to ash accumulating on my car. But this is the closest fire has ever come to someone I love. It's a horrible, sickening feeling.
But remember, kids, "climate change" is a hoax! MAGA!

(28,798 posts)she's kinda transient between Siskiyou County and southern OR, but this is the second fire in as many months that she's marked herself safe on fb for a fire up there.
I'm from LA living in NC now. Though I fortunately have not been a direct victim of a fire, I have family who have, including my cousins who literally lost it all in the Malibu fire. They've rebuilt now and she keeps a collection of bits and pieces of stuff that she pulled from the rubble. Her family had lost their home in the early 1960s as well, to fire. And my sister's husband lost a ranch in the Angeles National Forest about 20 years ago.
I honestly don't know if there is any kind of way to keep CA from burning on a very regular basis.

(51,608 posts)of the evacuation area. She unfriended me in 2016 when I put down tRump while she declared him as her new messiah/dear leader. I feel badly and hope she didn't lose her home but my sister isn't as kind. She was my friend first while in college many years ago then she roomed with my sister. My sister recalls finding Nazi paraphernalia under the bed after she moved out so that is why she isn't concerned. Weed is VERY pro tRump.
