Nick Begich refuses Sarah Palin's request to drop out of Alaska congressional House race

Source: USA Today

Republican Nick Begich refused former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's request to drop out of the race for Alaska's only congressional seat so that Republican voters could unite behind her candidacy.

"It's time for the GOP to unite, we have to unite behind my candidacy and start today with Nick Begich withdrawing from this race," Palin said at a press conference Monday in Wasilla, Alaska, according to CBS News.

The deadline to drop out of the November election was Monday.

Begich, who sought to cast Palin as a quitter and questioned her motives in running during the primary, said Monday his campaign is “confident that we are on a positive trajectory to win in November.”

Mary Peltola is the incumbent having just won the seat for the next couple of months.

Here is how the voting broke down in the primary with the votes won and the percentage of votes cast.

Democratic Mary Peltola 70,295 36.80
Republican Sarah Palin 57,693 30.20
Republican Nick Begich III 50,021 26.19
Libertarian Chris Bye 1,189 0.62

Additionally, there were 11,817 votes cast for the other 13 candidates who were running in the primary for the house seat.

Sarah Palin's former father in law endorsed Nick Begich.

The turnout for the Special/Primary was about half what the turnout was in November 2020.

However, I'm feeling a little better. I'm hoping the republican vote is split between the two candidates. I will be watching this race. I'm watching a lot of races in November.

"One of us has to go for the unity of the party. And obviously that should be you!"

I do hope this will last until the election.
