MALANG, Indonesia (AP) — Panic and a chaotic run for exits after police fired tear gas at an Indonesian soccer match to drive away rioting fans left at least 174 dead, most of whom were trampled upon or suffocated, making it one of the deadliest sports events in the world.

Attention immediately focused on the police use of tear gas, which is banned at soccer stadiums by FIFA. The president of the world soccer body called the deaths at the stadium “a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension,” while President Joko Widodo ordered an investigation of security procedures.

Riots broke out after the game ended Saturday evening with host Arema FC of East Java’s Malang city losing to Persebaya of Surabaya 3-2.

Disappointed with their team’s loss, thousands of supporters of Arema, known as “Aremania,” reacted by throwing bottles and other objects at players and soccer officials. Witnesses said fans flooded the Kanjuruhan Stadium pitch and demanded that Arema management explain why, after 23 years of undefeated home matches against rival Persebaya, this one ended in a loss.

MALANG, Indonesia (AP) — Clashes between supporters of two Indonesian soccer teams in East Java province killed 125 fans and 2 police officers, mostly trampled to death, police said Sunday.

Several brawls between supporters of the two rival soccer teams were reported inside the stadium after the Indonesian Premier League game ended with Persebaya Surabaya beating Arema Malang 3-2.

The fights prompted riot police to fire tear gas, which caused panic among supporters, said East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta.

Hundreds of people ran to an exit gate in an effort to avoid the tear gas. Some suffocated in the chaos and others were trampled, killing 34 almost instantly.

I have ever seen this much testosterone release at a WOMENS Soccer game, which are much better games than mens anyway.
We may not be too far away from this with “our” FOOTBALL. Some of the shots of the fans in the stadiums look way too much like the raging faces at the Capital Jan 6.

Sporting events have taken the place of battles and humans stupidly become too emotionally charged.

There was fighting on the field, but that didn't kill anybody. What killed 127 was when police fired teargas in huge amounts onto the field and it wafted up into the stands, which resulted in the people in the stands panicking and running for the exits because the teargas was choking them. 127 were then trampled to death. I don't know how the Malaysian legal system works, but in the US, the victims' families would sue the shit out of the police, and would win.

At least 174 people died and hundreds were injured in violence and a crowd crush after an Indonesian league football match, the deputy east Java governor has said.
...
Many people were crushed and suffocated when they ran to one exit, Afinta said.
...
A police spokesperson later put the death toll at 129 in one of the world’s deadliest sporting stadium disasters. A hospital director told local TV that one victim was aged five.
...
He said in an Instagram post on Sunday that 42,000 tickets had been issued for a stadium that had a capacity to hold 38,000 people.

On stage was the band Zephyr led by Candy Givens. She instructed the crowd to lie down and cover up and saved many lives that day.

I don't understand why so many take soccer so fucking seriously. Fights, riots, stabbings, all because their side lost. Or won.
