Denmark says Nord Stream 1 pipelines stop leaking

HELSINKI (AP) Authorities in Denmark said Sunday that the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipelines have also stopped leaking, a day after officials said that the ruptured Nord Stream 2 pipelines also appeared to stop leaking.
The Nord Stream AG company informed the Danish Energy Agency that a stable pressure now appears to have been achieved on the Nord Stream 1 pipelines.
The Nord Stream AG company has informed the Danish Energy Agency that a stable pressure now appears to have been achieved on the two Nord Stream 1 pipelines. This indicates that the blowout of gas from the last two leaks has now also been completed, the Danish agency tweeted Sunday.
The Danish agency said Saturday the Nord Stream 2 ruptured natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea appears to have stopped leaking natural gas.

The suspected sabotage this week of two gas pipelines that tied Russia and Europe together is driving home how vital yet weakly protected undersea infrastructure is vulnerable to attack, with potentially catastrophic repercussions for the global economy. (111,302 posts)I don't know who sabotaged them but Russia didn't have much of a motive, now they can't use those pipelines to blackmail Europe until they are rebuilt underwater, which can be done, but Russia won't want to do it right now.
In fact, I can't think of any government that would do this. About the best motive would be rabid environmentalists who want to burn the energy bridges and force Europe to consider other sources. It's hard to see them being able to afford undersea pipeline detection equipment.
Until somebody fesses up, it's going to be a mystery.

(26,303 posts)In this case the game could be to sabotage the current pipeline to cripple the economy of the rest of the European nations.
Meanwhile Russia focuses more on taking the southern portion of the Ukraine and then starts building new pipelines there.
After that they then use it to get the European nations to remove any Russian sanctions or they sell their oil and gas to China as well as other interested countries.

If Putin thinks he can turn to China as an alternative market he's making a terrible mistake. China will end up controlling all of Siberia's natural resources. (China won't have any interest in ruling Siberia's unruly people, they'll leave that work to Russia.)
Germany's plan to phase out coal and nuclear power in favor of Russian natural gas and various renewable energy follies was always a bad idea. In the long run natural gas is hardly any "greener" than coal, even with supplemental solar and wind power.
Yes, as some kind of radical environmentalist I think the world will be a better place if Nord Stream one and two are never restarted, but it's Putin who threw the temper tantrum and blew up his own assets.

explosion, then as the gas leaked out the pipes would have filled with sea water and they eventually return to normal pressure. Once the pipe is full of sea water, no more gas can pass into it and leak out because of the water pressure inside.

(4,690 posts)and the gas that has been leaking was residual gas remaining in the pipeline. It was expected that the leak would stop when all the gas had been exhausted.

(7,530 posts)They're talking about achieving "stable pressure" - I wonder if there might have been a blockage somewhere in the pipe and the gas was leaking from safety overflow valves that are there to release the pressure instead of exploding and causing permanent damage?
That *could* cause the multiple leaks, at least in my brain, though I'm no expert.
