DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) Irans supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded publicly on Monday to the biggest protests in Iran in years, breaking weeks of silence to condemn what he called rioting and accuse the United States and Israel of planning the protests.
The unrest, ignited by the death of a young woman in the custody of Irans morality police, is flaring up across the country for a third week despite government efforts to crack down.
On Monday, Iran shuttered its top technology university following an hours-long standoff between students and the police that turned the prestigious institution into the latest flashpoint of protests and ended with hundreds of young people arrested.
Speaking to a cadre of police students in Tehran, Khamenei said he was deeply heartbroken by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody, calling it a tragic incident. However, he lambasted the protests as a foreign plot to destabilize Iran, echoing authorities previous comments.

(36,132 posts)my take is that his god-fearing policies are about punishing women because his spiritually superior horny men can't stop lusting after Iranian women for just BEING. Just being comfortable as humans.
None of this is the idea of the US or Israel. It could be, though. One could suppose the two allies could stop their busy days and address Iranian women's unjust treatment, but it's only to serve the long term political purpose of making Iran look as bad on the global stage as it is on its own private stage.
Women should be equal. Everywhere. In bodily autonomy, bodily presentation, clothing, and mobility, and in exerting free will. But because Allah is male and Islam is a male invented religion, its theocracy isn't having that equality crap. And Iranian women know this, but they'll just settle for now with the social chains of inequality of dress removed. And as the heat of climate change increases, that's not too much for bagged women to ask.

(9,408 posts)Because America and the Zionists are secretly running Iran's "morality police" who arrest and detain young Iranian women and harass them to death! And all the thousands of Iranian protestors are Zionist employees. Everybody knows that!
