WASHINGTON - The Jan. 6 hearing room fell silent and still as committee members, guests and journalists watched previously unseen footage of congressional leaders scrambling for help behind the scenes as an angry, armed mob smashed windows and infiltrated the Capitol.

Videos filmed by documentarian Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, showed Democrats making frantic calls, practically begging federal officials for help, while former President Donald Trump watched the violence unfold on television, according to video of witnesses who testified before the panel earlier this year.

"I'm going to call the effin secretary of DOD," Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on Jan. 6, 2021, as he poked numbers on a phone to dial acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller.

Congressional leaders also called acting Attorney General Jeff Rosen and governors in Maryland and Virginia.

CNN Exclusive: New footage shows congressional leadership at Fort McNair on January 6, scrambling to save the US Capitol

Never-before-seen footage, obtained exclusively by CNN, shows in vivid new detail how congressional leaders fled the US Capitol on January 6 and transformed a nearby military base into a command center, where they frantically coordinated with Vice President Mike Pence and Trump Cabinet members to quell the insurrection and finish certifying the 2020 election. 

The January 6 select committee aired snippets of the footage at its public hearing on Thursday, but CNN has obtained roughly an hour of additional material that wasn't presented by the panel.

Congressional leaders contemplated, far more seriously than previously known, whether to reconvene the Electoral College proceedings at Fort McNair, the footage obtained by CNN reveals. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke with Pence about the "backup plan," and officials tried to figure out how they'd transport hundreds of lawmakers to the Army base. 

The extended raw footage shines a devastating light on then-President Donald Trump's inaction during the riot. Lawmakers are seen working around Trump to secure any help they could get - from the National Guard, federal agencies and local police departments - to defeat the mob he incited

Nancy’s overriding concern was for the American people. She was concerned about the appearance of whether this country could even hold an election with integrity. She was singleminded in her pursuit of reconvening.

As it turned out and trump himself proved, it was a fair election. Trump proved this with all his lawsuits.

But Nancy knew it was the appearance that was the concern at that moment.

Reconvening was the single most important decision made by the Democrats, driven by Nancy’s leadership. She knew what havoc trump could play if he had a few days, which she and Chuck were told it would take to restore the Capitol. They persisted, politely and firmly calling all their contacts, until they got the answer they needed.

For that I will be eternally grateful.

This footage shows their minds working. One can feel the intensity.

Is remarkable because it shows the traveling around they had to do. Imagine making important decisions with the stress of these hordes of people breaking in. Also being able to see the extent of the break-in as the tv cameras showed one of the crazies standing behind the podium!

But people like Pelosi are made for moments like these. Sully (Sullenberger) is another example. They have nerves of steel and when the chips are down, their cool, steely nerve comes out and they know just how to handle it.

I once saw someone put out a fire in an oven. Some people are capable and unflappable in the most dangerous circumstances. This person I saw knew exactly what to do and even made controlling that fire look easy.

She was born for this job.

I am pretty sure a lot of people suspected something bad would happen. The threat level was not subtle.

I stood in my livingroom on the other side of the continent just repeating, “Where is the National Guard?”

The Capitol Police were hung out to dry, and the National Guard in one nearby state were sitting in busses waiting for the traitorous POTUS to officially call them up. THAT was a shock.

9. And why didn't the DC National Guard respond to 1/6/21 attempted violent take over our Capitol?

This stand down order from the acting Sec. of Defense Miller who Trump installed after he lost the election
and prior to this letter the DC Guard could have responded to the riot/coup on their own.

Pence's daughter was there that day too. At least both of these women handled themselves better than Ivanka.

It's good to have this damning footage as evidence.

I like hearing Nancy say she's willing to punch Trump out and go to jail for it.

… feces around was not going to stop her from getting the essential job done. When told it would take days to clean up so people could re-enter, she said no way. If Trump had been able to halt the process for days the nightmare would have been so much worse.

14. Was Pence at Ft McNair, too?

We know that he refused to be evacuated and I thought that all the leaders were in a bunker still on the Capitol grounds. A lot more we still don’t know

Then we can see her going down the steps with others into the basement. And after that, she's at the military base.
