Buttigieg expresses no regret for American Rescue Plan amid high inflation
Source: The Hill
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday blamed high inflation on a global phenomenon, pushing back on the notion that Democrats spending bills are largely responsible for rising prices.
During an appearance on CBSs Face the Nation, moderator Margaret Brennan asked Buttigieg about Republicans criticizing Democrats for passing last year a $1.9 trillion stimulus package, dubbed the American Rescue Plan, that preceded a rise in inflation that hit a roughly 40-year high.
If we hadnt rescued the economy through the American Rescue Plan, we would not have had the 10 million jobs that were created under this president, Buttigieg said.
We wouldnt be seeing some of the lowest unemployment numbers in the history of the republic, we would be faced with the kinds of problems that we were faced with when the president arrived, which was an economy that was facing a very real risk of freefall, he continued, also calling the national unemployment rate of 3.5 percent strong as hell.

He's one of few Dems who make that KNOWN. Pres. Biden is also on his job telling people, that the whole world is in an economic MESS.
My friend said her granddaughter who lives overseas because her husband is in the military in Germany asked Nana, WHY aren't Democrats telling people over there just about how bad the economy is world wide? She said she told her granddaughter, honey you know how Dems are. Look at Pres. Obama, who was all but silent on his accomplishments which allowed the press to set the narrative that Pres. Obama passed down a bad economy to tRump. I told my friend Judy, I'm so frustrated that Dems are mostly silent SAM's on this and on so many of their accomplishments. Pres. Obama did admit that it was one of his biggest mistakes as president, not touting Dems accomplishments, and letting the press set the narrative on HIS presidency. Pres. Biden's out there though thank God, and we have a few other's like Pete, Katie Porter, Ryan in Ohio, Sharrod, Liz, Bernie, but you need more out there than the same few Dems, because we know that the GP US Taliban "King of treasonous liars" Party lie like rugs constantly and we also know that the so-called liberal media which is not liberal at all but mostly right-winged, corporate and money hungry for ad dollars like that old windbag who really needs to be put out ot pasture Andrea Mitchell who continues to say that our economy is heading for a recession, which gives the GOP great talking points Sure does dummy, especially since GQp'ers have NO answers put fourth on how to fix a world economy, let alone the economy here which THEY added $12 trillion dollars to, with tax cuts for the rich only.
I don't listen to Mitchell, and thank God that the folks over on Twitter listen to her so I won't have to, and they blast her on the regular along with Chuck Toad, that ignorant "but both sides do it" asshole

(16,963 posts)say that his policy dropped the deficit 1.3 trillion in 2021, and it will be half of the deficit he inherited from the wasteful, spendthrift r's who run the deficit up every time they get a majority. R's aren't any more responsible than drunken frat boys max out their allowance and then take Dad's wallet or Mom's purse, and max out the credit cards.
Here is a lnk about the deficit reduction. Sure hope the r's loses across the board, or it'll go right back up.

(36,060 posts)Media create the messaging problem for Democrats. Buttigieg should say that.
The NYT points out all the good stuff Dems and Biden have done now -- while back then, the NYT had not pointed out the strong points of Dems' paid out rescue money. NOW, the NYT says all that spending is a "problem" since Republicans say it is.
This is the media horse race bullshit our party has to put up with.

Mr. Warnock won. Democrats delivered payments of up to $1,400 per person.
But this year, as Mr. Warnock is locked in a tight re-election campaign, he barely talks about those checks.
Democratic candidates in competitive Senate races this fall have spent little time on the trail or the airwaves touting the centerpiece provisions of their partys $1.9 trillion economic rescue package, which party leaders had hoped would help stave off losses in the House and Senate in midterm elections. In part, that is because the rescue plan has become fodder for Republicans to attack Democrats over rapidly rising prices, accusing them of overstimulating the economy with too much cash.
The economic aid, which was intended to help keep families afloat amid the pandemic, included two centerpiece components for households: the direct checks of up to $1,400 for lower- to middle-class individuals and an expanded child tax credit, worth up to $300 per child per month. It was initially seen as Mr. Bidens signature economic policy achievement, in part because the tax credit dramatically reduced child poverty last year. Polls suggested Americans knew they had received money and why giving Democrats hope they would be rewarded politically.
Liberal activists are particularly troubled that Democratic candidates are not focusing more on the payments to families.
Its a missed opportunity and a strategic mistake, said Chris Hughes, a founder of Facebook and a senior fellow at the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at The New School, who is a co-founder of the liberal policy group Economic Security Project Action. Our public polling and our experience suggest the child tax credit is a sleeper issue that could influence the election, a lot more than a lot of candidates realized.

(5,125 posts)Prices rise and most of the time wages are NOT keeping up with standard cost of living increases so we have been going backward in regards to how much our money buys for some time in terms of how working people simply lose buying power year to year.
IF businesses didn't take so much joy in raising their prices just because "the market" CAN afford it, that would also slow inflation.
BUT when some do it, the rest follow suit so they aren't left behind.
Justice matters.

(16,646 posts)I've been saying since spring that Biden must be one hugely powerful president if he can cause world wide inflation.
They mostly squirm in response since they don't wanna admit he is powerful. They also squirm when I point out inflation is WORSE in countries like Britain. I often suggest that maybe he should have given larger stimulus checks.

(302 posts)Oil prices and Pandemic related issues are the key factors in Worldwide inflation. You can also now add the Fed raising interest rates as another factor. The so called solution to fixing inflation is now the number one factor raising cost of everything. Raising the Fed rate by 3%( at the fastest pace ever) increases the cost of financing all business expenditures and all consumer borrowing. This results in credit card rates to rise, home loans, rents, energy cost, transportation costs and anything that involves using money. OPEC is now purposely keeping production down to make sure they a barrel of all stays around a $100 dollars a barrel and that will make it impossible to reduce price rises because energy is the major expense of making the modern world function. Of course greed is also playing a role and that aspect of human nature is incurable.

(571 posts)...this man seems to always know what to say to give people a coherent explanation of the truth that boosts Democrats?
There are two sides to the inflation story: money, which Democrats worked and fought to put more of into the hands of Americans, and goods and services, which the Republicans have worked to reduce by working against the Democrat's efforts to fix the supply chain. Doesn't anyone remember that there were Republicans who voted against the effort to get more baby formula into stores?
