Exclusive: Iran agrees to ship missiles, more drones to Russia, defying the West
Source: Reuters
Oct 18 (Reuters) - Iran has promised to provide Russia with surface to surface missiles, in addition to more drones, two senior Iranian officials and two Iranian diplomats told Reuters, a move that is likely to infuriate the United States and other Western powers.
A deal was agreed on Oct. 6 when Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, two senior officials from Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards and an official from the Supreme National Security Council visited Moscow for talks with Russia about the delivery of the weapons.
"The Russians had asked for more drones and those Iranian ballistic missiles with improved accuracy, particularly the Fateh and Zolfaghar missiles family," said one of the Iranian diplomats, who was briefed about the trip.
A Western official briefed on the matter confirmed it, saying there was an agreement in place between Iran and Russia to provide surface-to-surface short range ballistic missiles, including the Zolfaghar.

(54,397 posts)I don't see why we shouldn't have a cruise missile or two pay the manufacturing facility a courtesy visit.
What's our downside, making the mullahs and ayatollahs dislike us? I would bet there is some serious internal dissent in Iran already as to whether sending death rockets to Putin to use on Ukrainian civilians is a particularly wise move. What did the Ukrainians ever do to Iran, anyway? Spill Coca-Cola on a Persian carpet?

(21,478 posts)Right now they are divided over women's rights and could make some internal changes (new government?) if the internal unrest continues. But, give them a common enemy, like their favorite nation to hate (besides Israel) and they might unite together, trading the "evil Satan" at home for one from abroad.
EDIT. See #7 for a similar idea that might work better.
But, depending on who the suppliers are, it could risk bringing more countries into the fight.

(54,397 posts)Given the womens uprising, Id say not too tight. If word gets out that their government is sponsoring the bombing of innocent civilians, I dont think too many protests against the action would occur unless we end up bombing a hospital by mistake.

(9,998 posts)I assume we have enough satellite surveillance to track such things. Then send the confiscated shipment to Ukraine.

(54,397 posts)If they are shipped overland or by air, the logistics of interception get very dicey. Even if by ship on the Caspian Sea, whose navy does the interception?
Iran has no beef with the Ukrainians. This is strictly a dual commercial plus a please Putin move.

(389 posts)It would lead to a war with Iran, though not in a conventional sense. Iran would ramp up terrorism again, against the US and allies. And ramp up their nuclear weapons research and production.
Then this would lead to an arms race and more conflict in the middle east again.

(549 posts)Iran will flip us the bird to our face. Saudi Arabia waits until our back is turned.
Also while I despise both countries' leadership, Iran is unquestionably a country. Saudi Arabia is a tribe with a flag.

Inflation and gas prices are world wide. This is a war for the very survival of the free world, while Ukraine fights for its very survival as a ppl and we have a scratch on our knee. I will gladly pay more at the pump and cut back on buying anything to help this cause.
We will lose our democracy if we dont fight for what we believe in. Putin may be another dotard, but he is a big player on the world state right now and has his hands all on the throat of our democracy. He needs to be stopped or other free countries
our allies will fall..we cant do that!
If we give in now, prices, inflation in coming years will be controlled by the blackmailer in chief. We cannot continue to buy energy from Russia..give in to his desires and this is what we will give our children.

(478 posts)These Iranian missiles have 5 times the range and 6 times the weapons load of anything Ukrainians have.
There are thousands in Iran ready to be shipped.
The Iranian drones are flea bites compared to these missile systems.

(32,771 posts)And how to deter this latest threat.
They cant win on the battlefield, so this what they do, and yes its awful. They will not break the will of the Ukrainian ppl, it only makes them more determined.
Gen Mark Hertling, Gen Ben Rhoades and GenDavid Petraeus- all retired, have all discussed Russias use of these terror tactics and althou horrific they all agree a war cannot be won lobbing missiles. It has to be won on the battlefield. And, right now the brave Ukrainian soldiers are handing Poopin his ass.

(35,340 posts)its back. How can you defeat an enemy when one side can hit you by air and you can't retaliate?
If we can't do that maybe, we should have stayed out of it in the first place.

(7,242 posts)and reprogramming the missiles' guidance systems to home back in on wherever launched them.
IIRC, the Russians had to replace/upgrade the guidance systems on an earlier tranche of drones that were delivered, so maybe someone among Russia's burgeoning insurgency is taking advantage of that and is on the case already ...

(478 posts)3 times the range of US HIMARS missiles provided to Ukraine.
Mach 3 - 4 with 5 meter accuracy.
The warhead is 6 times larger than what the US provided Ukraine's HIMARS systems.
These missiles are the real deal and Iran has thousands of them.
This is really bad news for Ukraine's people.
This is really bad...
