Buffalo shooter 'radicalized' through fringe online platforms, report finds

Source: Politico

ALBANY, N.Y. — Attorney General Tish James and Gov. Kathy Hochul released a report Tuesday on the role that online platforms played in the racially motivated shooting at a Buffalo supermarket earlier this year that killed 10 people and wounded three.

The report concluded “that fringe online platforms, like 4chan, radicalized the shooter; livestreaming platforms, like Twitch, were weaponized to publicize and encourage copycat violent attacks; and a lack of oversight, transparency, and accountability of these platforms allowed hateful and extremist views to proliferate online, leading to radicalization and violence.”

Background: After the shooting, Hochul announced new actions to strengthen gun laws in New York and quell the spread of white supremacy online. Part of that was a referral to James’ office to study the role that online platforms played in the 18-year-old shooter’s reported white supremacist ideology before the shooting in the largely Black community.

Investigators reviewed thousands of pages of documents, social media content and policies practiced by the platforms.

2. I'm surprised to see Twitch blamed. They have a pretty solid content policy.

Like the ones where the male character can assault women with impunity, kill others by the score and actually familiarize players with weapons and tactics.

when it suits them but we all know that they are 100% against free speech. Meanwhile, purposely ignorant Americans buy this BS from any source they can. They are a bunch of ostriches and proud of it. Being ignorant is like a badge of honor for the GQP supporters.

“Freedom of the press may be guaranteed in the Constitution. But a plurality of Republicans want to give President Trump the authority to close down certain news outlets, according to a new public opinion survey conducted by Ipsos and provided exclusively to The Daily Beast.”

So that 43% would approve a democrat shutting down Fox news?

because it is not news! it is an abuse of the first amendment.
my own brother and SIL have been brainwashed by fox news and hate radio. we don't even talk. we can no longer agree on reality.

i keep hoping the market and responsible journalism will put an end to it. so it's not gonna happen and there is little hope for our democracy under these conditions.

Pearly Young, 77, was killed by a Fox/Trump domestic terrorist in Buffalo while shopping for groceries.

He fervently believed in the Fox Great Replacement Theory.

For 25 years she ran a pantry where every Saturday she fed people in Central Park.

What white person was she replacing?

Can Tucker get the job back for him/her?

Before the internet people weren’t as crazy and radicalized as they are today. A lot of our division I out country has been because of the integer that. But a lot of being connected and learning has also been though the internet. Anyone can post on the internet crazy shit and get away with it.

That said I love the community of DU and would be upset if it was gone,

I’m calling on the NY AG to pass a remedial civics course.

This law would violate me.

We're calling for action with @GovKathyHochul to combat this extremism and violence:

- New York and other states must pass laws that criminalize graphic images or videos created by a person carrying out an attack and penalize resharing or reposting that same content.

Both sides of the political aisle really seem to hate the 1st Amendment. Frustrating.

New: Should people who share mass-shooting videos face civil penalties? New York's attorney general wants new laws to crack down on live-streamed violence. But some of the ideas could violate First Amendment rights https://wapo.st/3CAzwgU @Cat_Zakrzewski

But it's always 4Chan/8Chan. Which are basically discussion boards, like Reddit. Or DU.

I don't think Twitch moderators have the ability to know what the content is on every livestream at all times. It takes a while to react; users have to alert on it.
