Jorelys Rivera's killer commits suicide in prison

JACKSON, GA. (CBS ATLANTA) -

The man who pleaded guilty to killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera killed himself in prison Thursday afternoon, according to officials.

Georgia Department of Corrections spokesperson Kristen Stancil said 20-year-old Ryan Brunn was found in his jail cell unresponsive at 4:15 p.m. at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.

Stancil said Brunn was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m.

GBI investigators have been sent to the prison to investigate, according to Stancil.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said an autopsy will be performed on Brunn's body at the GBI Medical Examiner's Office in Decatur on Friday.

Coward knew he'd have to live out the rest of his life in solitary confinement or be beat the fuck up every day by other prisoners.

This is why, even though I oppose the death penalty because the price of error is too high, I'd have no problem if voluntary euthanasia was offered in every state. Give all those prisoners who have LWOP (Life Without Parole) sentences the option of just clocking out early: safe, painless, doctor-assisted suicide. Save tax-payers a bunch of money and put the most serious offenders out of their misery.

A win-win scenario.

But it would need lots of safeguards so it doesn't become, in practice, an execution.

I'm not much for violence but after reading what he did to that poor child my "I'm sorry for what happened to him" meter is at a -1000.

He arrived at the diagnostic center, saw what it was going to be for him from now on, and checked out.

Indeed, he may have been planning it since he decided to enter a plea, since this sort of thing can be tougher to pull off in county jail.

Probably never interacted at any length with any other prisoner.

Hung himself with his sweatshirt after fooling the psychologist that was meant to assess him.

"According to a statement released by the Georgia Department of Corrections, Brunn was placed in a segregation cell when he arrived at the prison on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he was interviewed by mental health staff, and based on the counselor's findings, he wasn't placed on suicide watch. He was still in the segregation cell when he committed suicide."
