Alex Jones seeks new trial after $1B Sandy Hook verdict

Source: AP

By DAVE COLLINS

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has asked a Connecticut judge to throw out a nearly $1 billion verdict against him and order a new trial in a lawsuit by Sandy Hook families, who say they were subjected to harassment and threats from Jones’ lies about the 2012 Newtown school shooting.

Jones filed the requests Friday, saying Judge Barbara Bellis’ pretrial rulings resulted in an unfair trial and “a substantial miscarriage of justice.”

“Additionally, the amount of the compensatory damages award exceeds any rational relationship to the evidence offered at trial,” Jones’ lawyers, Norm Pattis and Kevin Smith, wrote in the motion.

Christopher Mattei, a lawyer for the 15 plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Jones, declined to comment on the filing Saturday, but said he and other attorneys for the Sandy Hook families will be filing a brief opposing Jones’ request.

I think that an appropriate punishment for Jones would be a billion and 6 months in the electric chair. He is the perfect example of someone who would do anything for money. Who it hurts is inconsequential.

Given his refusal to cooperate or give a legible defense in the previous trial, I have to think his chances are slim.

The judge in the Connecticut case has yet to decide the amount of punitive damages against Jones.

The only thing that I know personally, is that I cry whenever I think about those children…and what they experienced. It’s the saddest thing ever.

There is not enough money to heal the wounds.

that they can't make money by lying about the cause of other's misery and causing threats of physical harm to those same people is the reason for the lawsuit.

"Give me a new trial" is not part of the appeals process in US law.

These people are idiots.

... FOR 2 YEARS!!!

That's why he was found liable by default, because he refused to participate in his trial (discovery etc) for 2 years. And now he says "oh, if you give me another trial I'll participate in that one!"

Sorry dude, you had your chance for a trial & you refused it. Too bad so sad.

That's another thing I'm finding most folks don't understand about the Jones verdict. He was found liable by default because he refused to cooperate with the court & participate in the case against him. He was not found liable on the merits, in fact there was no trial to evaluate the merits of the case, he simply refused to participate in the case & therefore was found liable by default. That's very different from a trial proceeding & a jury finding he committed defamation.

for anyone who loses a trial, civil or criminal. It almost never succeeds and Jones’ appeal will fail too. Then he will likely appeal based on rulings by the judge during the trial that Jones claims were erroneous.

Forced cliff diving with no water but instead a very large and deep bathtub of kerosene and gasoline and of course pre-lit and full of large cactus and large arrangements of razor sharp katanas so your journey will be extremely pleasurable for every second of your stay?

This is the no fucking around school of vulture food creation and crematory sciences after all.

... I believe he should get a 2nd trial. After all the evidence we heard from the first trial and verdict, does anyone wonder that he'd be convicted all over again? The damages may go up, for all he knows.

Jones will be expected to pay for the 2nd trial - all litigation costs are on him. On top of the awarded damages.
