CVS and Walgreens agree to $10 billion in tentative deals on opioid cases. Walmart will also

Source: CNN

CNN — CVS and Walgreens have tentatively agreed to pay a combined $10 billion to settle lawsuits brought by states and local governments alleging the retailers mishandled prescriptions of opioid painkillers.

Walmart has also tentatively agreed to pay $3 billion to settle a similar lawsuits, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The agreement wouldn’t be finalized until enough states, counties and cities agree to the terms, the outlet said. CNN has reached out to Walmart for comment.

CVS said if the settlement is reached, it would pay the states nearly $5 billion over 10 years beginning in 2023. Walgreens said would also pay about $5 billion in remediation payments over the course of 15 years.

“We believe this is in the best interest of the company and our stakeholders at this time, and allows our pharmacists, dedicated healthcare professionals who live and work in the communities they serve, to continue playing a critical role in providing education and resources to help combat opioid misuse and abuse,” Walgreens said. CVS also said it is looking to curb opioid abuse.

CVS agrees to $5 billion tentative deal in opioid cases. Walgreens and Walmart will also reportedly settle

CNN -- CVS has tentatively agreed to pay $5 billion to settle lawsuits brought by states and local governments alleging the retailers mishandled prescriptions of opioid painkillers. Two other major retailers - Walgreens and Walmart - have tentatively agreed to pay billions of dollars to settle similar lawsuits, according to reports from Bloomberg and Reuters.

The deal calls for Walgreens to pay at least $4 billion and Walmart to pay $3 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The agreement wouldn't be finalized until enough states, counties and cities agree to the terms, Bloomberg said. CNN has reached out to the companies for comment. CVS said if the settlement is reached, it would pay the states over 10 years beginning in 2023.

As the US marks National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, people who started using opioids as children share their stories to help children and parents get educated about the risks of drug abuse. "We are pleased to resolve these longstanding claims and putting them behind us is in the best interest of all parties, as well as our customers, colleagues and shareholders," said Thomas Moriarty, CVS' general counsel, in a statement.

"We are committed to working with states, municipalities and tribes, and will continue our own important initiatives to help reduce the illegitimate use of prescription opioids." US states, cities and counties have filed more than 3,000 lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies, accusing them of downplaying the addiction risk and failing to stop pills from being diverted for illegal use.

I mean, you don’t give people more drugs then necessary. I think they should give five days worth of drugs, and if they need more, they go back to the doctor to get a whole new prescription. giving out months worth of pain pills is stupid.

prescriptions, but let a woman bring her teenage daughter in for a birth control prescription or any woman with a prescription for the morning after pill or the abortion pills and some pharmacists suddenly got religion and would refuse to fill them. So I guess their religion says it’s okay to aid drug addiction but anything helping women is off the table. I read recently that white evangelicals have transferred their religious beliefs into total affiliation with the Republican Party with the result that their beliefs are far more about power than what is taught in the Bible, which they twist to support political goals. They are no longer a religion, just another cult.

Some people require opiates to be able to live their lives.

I am one of them.

I have severe chronic pain from the multiple sclerosis I've had since at least 1985. I suffer a lot from a myriad of pain issues that nothing can be done for. It was my first symptom of the MS, a stabbing pain in my shoulder that was unexplained.

Without these MEDICATIONS, I would be in a wheelchair and unable to do many of the things I still am able to do, like walk and keep the house clean and tend to my three cats and drive.

As for CVS, they are indeed crooks. They attempted to manipulate my prescription by altering it to half of what it was written for. I caught the "mistake" and reported it at once. It turned out that someone working for CVS had been doing this to other people with prescriptions that treat pain.

That person got caught and is now in prison where they belong.

I find it disturbing that many people do not realize that opiates have a real use for some people, those suffering from diseases like I have and also people that have other pain issues that cannot be treated with other medications/techniques.

I've tried them all, the gabapentins, the tramadols, all of them. None of them work or I am allergic to them, another problem I have with too many medications.

Hate me if you like, I really do not care.

I am treated like a criminal because I suffer from a very painful progressive disease. I do not enjoy it one bit and no, I do not get "high" from the very limited amount of these medications I receive.

I do what I have to do to stay alive and keep it together and I am alone now, no husband around any longer to help me maintain an entire household. No one helps me and I don't have the financial resources to hire someone. So, I'm on my own, like it or not.

We only want doctors to give a small amount per prescription. Maybe 5 to 10 days per prescription. then the doctor would be required reevaluate the patient and then justify in writing why another prescription is necessary. it will save lives which is what we want. We’ve lost too many people especially young people to opiate addiction, and it needs to stop immediately. A little inconvenience for doctors and patients won’t hurt anybody.

Wed Nov 2, 2022, 11:11 AM

Even once a month is a real hassle.

Gasoline is at $6 a gallon and I am not driving very much.

More trips to the pharmacy and more work for the provider I go to.

It is unfair to target people with progressive diseases in this fashion. As I age, the pain is worsening. Many days I can barely get out of bed much less get dressed and drive to the pharmacy. People have not a clue what it is like to be totally disabled and sick. Right now I'm on another round of antibiotics. They are so busy drug testing me that they failed to culture the infections. Seems the infections do not respond to the antibiotics they've been prescribing buy worry not! I passed the drug test! Yippee!

It is also plain stupid and dangerous.

Some day every single person will encounter a problem called severe pain in their life time. Hopefully it will not become chronic as mine has been since 1985.

Maybe they can figure out a different way I don’t know. Maybe you could be exempt under a program designed for chronic pain suffers. However, you have to admit that there’s a huge problem with abuse. You’re one of the few that is not abusing it. I hope you recover soon and get off all of all that medication.

I will continue to decline as I age.

As it now stands, my right hand is barely working.

My back is so painful I can barely move.

I have NO HELP.

You don't get it do you?

Many people with multiple sclerosis have chronic pain problems and require medications to keep them moving.

That's what it is all about, keep your quality of life at a level so you don't end up in a nursing home for the rest of your life.

Is that better?

I cannot have medications delivered to where I live. I must go to the pharmacy. Even standing in line waiting to pick something up is painful for me.

Some day maybe you will understand.

how limited prescriptions help anyone. Street drugs are readily available. Street drugs containing Fentanyl. People would be better off with a clean source of drugs with a known dosage.

I don't know how long the line is but fortunately I am not in it.

If they suggested it to me, I think I'd just give up. They never have.

I get ONE pill a day, ONE!

The illegal Chinese fentanyl is the problem! There are OD's of it every day around here, EVERY DAY! You never read about a person with cancer, MS or another painful problem OD'ing on the RX they legal receive! At least I have not!

I go to a health clinic and the provider I see gets it.

I can look forward to being drug tested every time I go in there.

Why in the HELL didn't they check the urine sample for the bacteria that almost KILLED ME LAST WEEK?

They don't get kick-backs for doing cultures that are complex and must be sent out, that is why!

Damn near died last week, yes I did.

It scared the hell out of me but no one cares but my cats.

A sad life I live.

An in-law realized I had no food in the house as I was too sick to go out. She offered to send me dinner. I was so excited! I sat up with my porch light on until 11:00 p.m. and no one arrived with a dinner for me.

Seems she forget and was out dining with a friend instead. That made me feel useless and unimportant but I sort of knew that already.

Living on Kaiser rolls and American cheese isn't what I had in mind for my "retirement" so to speak.

This is not the life I had hoped for at 67 years old. Nope.

The twins are ultra-cute!

I have a pair of tabby twins that my late husband adopted. They are 9+ years old now.

I also have a black cat. She is soooooo sweet!

I all so much!

My life as it now stands, that of a grieving widow living in poverty would be pointless without them.

As for the dinner that was promised, well now I know! What a phony person that in-law is. Its obvious I cannot ask her for help if I need it if she cannot even mange to get some food to me!

I can't believe my wife got them to sit long enough to take that photo. There was a 4th cat, but we successfully adopted her out. These little ones were from a local feral. We finally trapped her and got her fixed. We were trying to adopt these guys out too, but we ended up keeping them.

I sincerely hope that things get better for you!

I don't understand going after the pharmacies who dispensed them, and not the doctors who wrote them. I get there maybe should have been more diligence from the pharmacies in reporting excessive scripts, but they're ultimately following the orders from the doctor.

A worker there altered my prescription by one-half.

Where did the other half go?

Probably to some drug dealer that this "worker" knew!

It was an inside job at the local CVS pharmacy and I caught the person and turned them in.

Many people in my situation would have just took the prescription with half of it missing and perhaps would have said nothing at all being they are being demonized by society.

Most if not all of these patients are indeed sick with problems ranging from multiple sclerosis to cancer and also serious injuries like Paul Pelosi is now experiencing!

They need to go after the Chinese fentanyl being sold on the streets.

One pill of that shit will KILL you, yes, kill you!

Going after someone like me is ridiculous as they have no options for me.

Worry not however is what I say. I'll be dead and gone soon anyway as MS cuts about 10 years off of your life. I am 67 now. My father was gone at 75; mother at 77 so my time as a greedy parasite "hooked on drugs" is almost up! Yippee! I can hardly wait!
