Paul Pelosi Leaves San Francisco Hospital After Attack

Source: New York Times

Six days after suffering a fractured skull in a vicious attack, Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been discharged from the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Mr. Pelosi, 82, is resting at home, recovering from the injuries to his head, arm and hand. He spent most of his time at the hospital in the intensive care unit, according to a person familiar with the matter.

“The Pelosi family is thankful for the beautiful outpouring of love, support and prayers from around the world,” Ms. Pelosi said in a statement. “Paul is grateful to the 911 operator, emergency responders, trauma care team, I.C.U. staff and the entire Z.S.F.G.H. medical staff for their excellent and compassionate lifesaving treatment he received after the violent assault in our home.”

She added that her husband “remains under doctors’ care as he continues to progress on a long recovery process and convalescence. He is now home surrounded by his family who request privacy.” A 42-year-old man, David DePape, has been charged by federal prosecutors with attempting to kidnap Ms. Pelosi and assaulting a relative of a federal official after breaking into the couple’s San Francisco home on Oct. 28. He also pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to several state felony charges.

Mr. DePape, who had embraced far-right conspiracy theories, struck Mr. Pelosi with a hammer in front of the police, according to the authorities, and told investigators that he wished to break Ms. Pelosi’s kneecaps if she “lied” and see her “wheeled into Congress” as a lesson to other lawmakers.

SF General Hospital gets new name with Mark Zuckerberg donation

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - A multimillion dollar gift by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is set to transform San Francisco General Hospital in more ways than one. On behalf of San Francisco General Hospital, the City's Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted to formally accept a $75 million gift from Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan.
It's believed to be the largest single private gift by individuals to a U.S. public hospital.

"It's really a game-changer for us," said SFGH CEO Sue Currin. "We're now able to fully equip the hospital with the latest state-of-the-art equipment and give the patients what they really deserve."
The grant will help complete the new acute care and trauma center, scheduled to open in December. And soon, babies born at SFGH will have the Facebook founder's name on their birth certificates.

In recognition of their gift, the complex will be renamed the Priscilla and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. The Zuckerberg name will remain on the hospital for 50 years and should start showing up on signage and paperwork later on this year. "It's not bad. I guess he has the money to do it," said Niguse Asmlash, who was visiting his father at the hospital Tuesday. "If I had $75 million, I'd put my name up here too."

But patient Dave Moss didn't like the name change. "[Zuckerberg] can be philanthropic all he wants to be but he doesn't need to have it named after him," said Moss. "And I just think that this is a public hospital and it should just stick with being named San Francisco General." San Francisco General Hospital Foundation CEO Amanda Heier said donor recognition is critical to fundraising campaigns. "The Zuckerbergs' name is added to the existing San Francisco General Hospital's name which is globally renowned," said Heier. "And so it is a change but not a drastic one."

Do it because you believe in doing good. I worked in the medical field in San Francisco. It was always “General” — an urban hospital that serves people of every walk of life.

He'll have private duty caregivers around the clock, RN visits at least daily, and in home rehab. It sounds like the blows to his arm and hand might be the bigger problems and will need the most work.

People with small depressed skull fracture from blunt objects tend to do quite well.

...........Local prosecutors this week detailed his early morning break-in to the Pelosis’ house, in the upscale neighborhood of Pacific Heights, as they argued for Mr. DePape to be detained without bail. On Friday, prosecutors and Mr. DePape’s defense team will appear before a San Francisco judge, who will set a date for his preliminary hearing and a bail hearing.

Mr. DePape, carrying zip-ties and two hammers, smashed through a glass door at the back of the house and confronted Mr. Pelosi, who had been asleep in his bedroom, according to two filings issued this week by state and federal prosecutors. The suspect demanded to see Ms. Pelosi, who was in Washington at the time, the authorities said.

After some discussion, Mr. DePape allowed Mr. Pelosi to use the bathroom, where Mr. Pelosi called 911 and tried to signal surreptitiously to the dispatcher that he was in trouble while Mr. DePape listened to the call,
the prosecutors said. When police officers arrived at the house, they witnessed the two men, who had moved downstairs, struggling for control of one of the hammers.

Mr. DePape pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and smashed him on the head with it before being tackled and restrained by officers, according to the local prosecutors’ filing. “Mr. Pelosi remained unresponsive for about three minutes, waking up in a pool of his own blood,” the filing said.

Later, according to the same filing, Mr. DePape told officers that he was there on a “suicide mission,” looking for Ms. Pelosi and that he had other targets as well: a local professor and several state and federal politicians, as well as their relatives.
“I’m sick of the insane fucking level of lies coming out of Washington, D.C.,” Mr. DePape told officers, according to the authorities.
Mr. DePape grew up in British Columbia in Canada and moved to California about two decades ago. At times, Mr. DePape was homeless and living in Berkeley, Calif., before moving to a garage in nearby Richmond about two years ago, where he worked as a part-time carpenter.

Most likely the GQP will say this never would have happened if the asshole were here legally? Will tjey make it an immigratation issue?

"The Canadian man accused of attacking Paul Pelosi with a hammer and trying to kidnap Speaker Nancy Pelosi had been living in the United States with an expired immigration status for years, officials at the Department of Homeland Security said on Thursday."

"David DePape, 42, who the authorities say broke into the Pelosis’ home in San Francisco on Friday, entered the United States legally on March 8, 2008, from Mexico through a port of entry in California, the department said. Typically, Canadian visitors who travel to the United States for work or pleasure are admitted for six months."

From what I understand, an alarm would have automatically notified authorities.

In any case, it's great to hear that Mr. Pelosi is back home again. We up here in Wisconsin wish him a full and speedy recovery!!
