Pfizer study says updated COVID boosters rev up protection

Source: Yahoo News (via AP)

Pfizer’s updated COVID-19 booster significantly revved up adults’ virus-fighting antibodies, the company said Friday, releasing early findings from a rigorous study of the new shots.

Booster doses tweaked to target the most common omicron strain rolled out in early September, and the Food and Drug Administration said the latest data should spur more Americans to get one — especially before another expected wave of cases as people travel for Thanksgiving.

Pfizer said people 55 and older who got the omicron-targeting booster had four-fold higher antibody levels than those given an extra dose of the original vaccine.

With many Americans reluctant to roll up their sleeves again, perhaps the better question is how the new booster compares to going without another dose.

2. I had a big reaction to my second Pfizer dose.

Fever and headache for four/five days. So I got a Moderna booster instead of Pfizer. Feverish maybe one day.

I skipped the second booster just because I needed five clear days to deal with probable symptoms. And as soon as I heard about the updated booster, I decided that I should get that. I hoped for the updated Moderna but it wasn't available here. So I had the updated Pfizer yesterday, knowing I had time until Sunday to get over symptoms.

But I had no symptoms other than a bit of soreness in my arm, not too bad. The man who gave me the shot said it'd help me to keep moving my arm. Sure enough, this was even easier than the very first shot.

Contracted Covid about two months ago, and spent two days in the hospital after being diagnosed with myocarditis. I'm not sure about another booster after that. Feel free to convince me otherwise. I'm open to discuss it.

6. The risk of myocarditis is higher after getting COVID

Much higher than the risk of contracting myocarditis after a vaccine.

The overall risk of myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle – is substantially higher immediately after being infected with COVID-19 than it is in the weeks following vaccination for the coronavirus, a large new study in England shows.

Didn’t even notice it! So YMMV, yet you might get lucky. I only wish there were more vaccines for me to take. Bring it on, science!

p.s. don’t forget your 2 Shingrix shots! And flu!

14. In anticipation of the flu season and an upcoming trip in mid December to Boston for a wedding

I got my flu and COVID booster last Sunday. I've mixed my COVID vaxes between Moderna and Pfizer and initially wanted the Moderna booster this time around, but they only had Pfizer, so I got that one. No real bad side effects from either shot and my shoulders are no longer sore. I'll feel a little safer taking that trip in December now.

15. Within one month, from 9 to 11 times the antibodies from this new booster,

(!!!) real good thing for thanksgiving and kicking off the holidays. Should definitely be safer over Christmas, even if they do drop off to “only” four times or so over time.

We kept delaying and finally got around to getting ours a week or so ago. Very quick at CVS, We just walked in instead of registering online, and there was no wait — three shots including one of the two new pneumonia vaccines.

We both had barely noticeable soreness in the arm, and possibly a mild fever that evening from one of them (didn’t check), but ibuprofen took care of that. And that was it.

Unfortunately, only those who have completed a primary vaccination series are eligible. We had to explain to a neighbor last month. She wasn’t pleased, but this is a real booster, as in made to boost immunity already created.

16. I had horrible symptoms from the Pfizer bivalent booster on Wed.

Nov 2022

Don't know why but I had symptoms almost as bad as I did with the first booster I got (also Pfizer). I was told this did not make anyone sick and I was stupid enough to believe it. I have horrible shooting head pains and fever; not to mention I can't get out of bed for about 24 hours. Then lingering weakness for a couple more days. I guess it's just me because I haven't seen anyone else saying the same. I'll never do it again, that's for sure. The "ice-pick" headaches are very scary!

17. I got the Pfizer booster & the flu vaccination about 3 weeks ago.

I had no reaction whatsoever and even getting them both in the same arm I didn't have any pain even later in the day. What surprised me was the flu vaccination because with the last one I received I was sick that night but ok the next morning.
I haven't been sick with anything since 2008 so I feel confident that I'm well protected, having always masked in public places which I still did today when I went grocery shopping.

This time my arm was sorer. I might not have moved it around as much, or even forgotten for the first time.

On a scale (low)1-10 had 2-3 in the side shoulder esp if I lifted it for two days then started fading away to 0 in 2ish days more.
