McCarthy survives leadership challenge; Scott to challenge McConnell in Senate

Source: Washington Post

Today, bitter Republican divisions surfaced as the party grappled with its failure to win the Senate majority and the likelihood of a narrow edge in the House despite GOP predictions that it would make significant gains in President Biden’s first midterm elections. The fallout from the disappointing performance was evident in the Senate as Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) on Tuesday announced a challenge to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has led the party since 2007. In the House, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was nominated by fellow Republicans to be speaker in the next Congress, surviving a challenge from Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) on a 188-to-31 vote. The real test will be in January, when McCarthy must win a majority vote of the full House — 218 votes — which could require offering concessions to disaffected Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) remains confident he has the votes to remain Senate GOP leader, despite a challenge from Sen. Rick Scott (Fla.).

Emerging from a Senate GOP lunch meeting that lasted over two hours on Tuesday, McConnell said his caucus had a “rather lengthy and fulsome discussion, not only of the election, but about the way forward.”

“I think it’s pretty obvious we may or may not be voting tomorrow, but I think the outcome is pretty clear, I want to repeat again: I have the votes,” McConnell told reporters. “I will be elected. The only issue is whether we do it sooner or later. And I think we’ll probably have another discussion about that tomorrow.”

That should be a great match to have a ringside seat at--fading malevolence vs. corrupt incompetence.

The blood would flow in a match like that. The winner would learn very quickly what a Pyrrhic Victory is.

Mc will be He-man to Skeletor in the final battle of Greyskull. I HAVE THE POWER!

The more bloodletting in the Republican party, the better I like it.

He is so crooked that when he dies he will have to be buried in a zig-zag coffin. He is irredeemable and has no human qualities that mitigate his foulness. In other words, a great Florida Republican...
