Mass shooting at LGBT+ club follows wave of threats to drag performers and venues
Source: The Independant
Moments after he entered, a 22-year-old gunman allegedly fired into a LGBT+ club in Colorado Springs, killing at least five people and injuring 25 others.
The attack inside the drag venue and club that has served as safe haven for the citys LGBT+ community for more than two decades follows a wave of politicised harassment aimed at drag performers and the venues that host them.
----
LGBT+ advocates and public officials condemned the mass shooting as an act of hate-driven violence, born from Americas toxic mix of bigotry and absurdly easy access to firearms, according to a statement from Lambda Legal CEO Kevin Jennings.
The proliferation of mis- and disinformation about LGBT+ people has fuelled the rise in on- and offline hate, which advocates have repeatedly warned will pave the way for offline violence.

I fear we will see more of this coming soon.

(1,530 posts)UVALDE, TX: 75 heavily-armed cops stand around for 45 minutes with their heads up their asses while a shooter methodically murders 21 kids inside the school.
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO: Gunman enters gay bar, fires a few shots, two queers jump him, disarm him, throw him to the floor and beat the shit out of him.
Could it be that we need more gay cops?
From the Washington Post:
A patron tackled the gunman inside Club Q and prevented him from killing more people, one of the clubs co-owners said Sunday.
Nic Grzecka said he and his co-owner had reviewed surveillance video that showed the gunman entering the building and immediately begin firing, leaving five dead and two dozen wounded, including customers and staffers.
Grzecka said the shooting lasted no more than two minutes before a patron subdued the gunman and another helped hold him down. Police arrived about three minutes later, he said.
I dont even know the names of these people, Grzecka said of the two patrons. But what they did is incredible.
Club Q had an active-shooter protocol, which Grzeckas co-owner, Matthew Haynes, said was followed to the letter. The two owners arrived at the scene minutes after the shooting, Grzecka said.
They turned recordings from surveillance cameras inside the club over to investigators. Grzecka said they checked their records, which showed the suspect had never been to the club before.

(33,643 posts)Do they never let anyone inside unless their ID can be scanned by its barcode, and then maintain a list of everyone who ever enters based on that barcode? That's actually a little disturbing if so I have to say. 'Not Cool' to store that info, IMHO.
Anyways ... kudos to these heroes.
What an absolutely horrible attack on innocent people this was

Where are you reading the ID stuff?

(33,643 posts)Maybe they'd never bought anything there (using their own credit card), I suppose that makes sense to be able to quickly check, but I wonder if they could actually be sure he'd never been there period.

(83,791 posts)The far right are fueling this with disinformation, see MGT and Boebo, CO Rep for example. They spew hate, fear and lies.
I am straight and have been to a hell of a lot of gay bars with my friends over the years. We went to have fun and dance. No one ever had an issue that I was there, it was always a warm and welcoming community. I felt safer there than most straight bars.
I am so sorry, BtA.

(12,555 posts)No long drawn out trial, costing millions, where the shooter gets to become a hero to the sick minded, no "terrible childhood' excuses, none of the other BS we see in these cases. Only to result in a life sentence where the murderer gets fed for 40 yrs & gets 1000 letters from people who think he's innocent.
Take them OUT & never speak their name again.
