Elon Musk's Twitter reinstates Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

Elon Musks Twitter has reinstated the personal account of far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, which was banned in January for violating the platforms COVID misinformation policies at the time.
Greenes reinstatement comes after Musk over the weekend reinstated the account of former President Donald Trump, who was banned in the aftermath of the deadly Jan. 6 riots on the Capitol in 2021. Twitter at the time feared there was a risk of further incitement to violence if Trump was allowed to remain on the platform. Trump himself has said he wont return to Twitter and as of Monday had not yet tweeted since the reinstatement, although he also hasnt deleted his account.
Musk apparently based his decision to allow Trump back on the site on an unscientific Twitter poll he posted on his timeline. There appeared to be no such poll for Greenes account. Earlier, Musk said he wont make major decisions about content or restoring banned accounts before setting up a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints.
Musk has frequently expressed his belief that Twitter had become too restrictive. Before the U.S. midterm elections this month, he urged his independent-minded Twitter followers to vote Republican.

(6,017 posts)There are some communities that will likely be much slower in migrating to other platforms. Not all other platforms are disabled accessible, for instance. But also people depend on their communities; until that community decides as a group (ie, enough get fed up and leave due to some event) to leave, they'll likely stick around. Many of them have carefully cultivated their blocks and follows to - in the past anyway - eliminate most of the noise people think of when they hear Twitter.

(2,910 posts)Twitter is not ground to fight over. It's private property. It's now Mordor. Our presence only feeds Sauron, by giving him ad fodder.
Twitter was improving in some respects. I hated it for infantilizing discourse down to 140 words, but then longer posts and threadreader came along. But it's history now. Time to move on.
Unless the UN takes it over and runs it as a non-profit. Or as someone said, a worker-owned co-op. Fat chance. Move on and build a better community. It's already dead, just not yet decayed.

(2,910 posts)I called it a feudal serfdom run by Mad King Ludwig (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_II_of_Bavaria). Some of Musk's ("Cheechon Chusk" ) stoner behavior reminds me of him.
I've always avoided all things tooter, zuckbook, and gaggle, because they're owned and run by capitalist predators. "If the service is free, YOU are the product". I did soc med back in BBS days (1200 baud modem). Those were clubs run by friends. From what little I've seen, Mastodon is a vastly upscaled version of that.
I'll kinda be glad when tooter finally dies, because it seems like about 3/4 of the posts here consist of a large white space with the words "Link to tweet" in the middle, nothing else. My net hygiene blocks tooter as a dangerous place. I wish people would make the effort to actually say what they're posting about. A few, like Nevilledog, have the courtesy to do so.
