US FCC bans sales, import of Chinese tech from Huawei, ZTE

WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. is banning the sale of communications equipment made by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE and restricting the use of some China-made video surveillance systems, citing an unacceptable risk to national security.
The five-member Federal Communications Commission said Friday it has voted unanimously to adopt new rules that will block the importation or sale of certain technology products that pose security risks to U.S. critical infrastructure. Its the latest in a years-long escalation of U.S. restrictions of Chinese technology that began with President Donald Trump and has continued under President Joe Bidens administration.
The FCC is committed to protecting our national security by ensuring that untrustworthy communications equipment is not authorized for use within our borders, and we are continuing that work here, said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, in a prepared statement.
Along with Huawei and ZTE, the order affects products made by companies such as Hikvision and Dahua, makers of widely used video surveillance cameras.

ZTE, a company involved in hacking American cyber security.
A $500 million loan to Trump related projects works wonders to make America protect Chinese jobs. And some patents for Ivanka.
Too bad our coal miners did not think of that.

(6,591 posts)It indicates that our decription/secure comms technology is behind China's capabilities.
I remember some years ago when China successfully demonstrated their quantum communications technology by quantum encrypting a signal in a laboratory, bouncing it off a satellite, & quantum decrypting it in another laboratory hundreds or thousands of miles away. They were the first country to do so (or at least to announce it publicly) & I expected a firestorm of media & public attention, because scientists had been working on quantum encryption for decades & it's the only known form of encryption that cannot be hacked, because, due to the laws of physics, merely "observing" the signal in any way causes the quantum wave function to collapse, destroying the encrypted signal. You literally cannot "listen in" or "copy" the signal without destroying it. Welcome to the wonderful world of quantum physics, I love it.
It's a major MAJOR advance in secure communications technology, perhaps the biggest advance possible because physics may not allow us to go any further, yet the media & the public reacted with a collective yawn.
I don't think folks understand the significance of quantum encryption, but sure, let's focus on imaginary "grooming" & "drag shows" in our schools & ignore math, science, & physics. Dumb them down, GOP.
I can only hope that our government is way ahead of China on technologies like this, & they're just better at keeping it secret. The fact that we feel compelled to ban products, however, makes me think our technology is not sufficiently advanced to monitor & control what those products are doing, & that's what I consider a bad sign.
