SpaceX Raises Prices for Starlink in Ukraine Amid Funding Troubles

Source: PC Mag

The price for Starlink is going up for consumers in Ukraine amid lingering questions over how SpaceX plans to fund the satellite internet service in the war-torn country.

Users in Ukraine reported receiving an email from SpaceX on Tuesday about the price increase, which will raise the monthly cost for Starlink in the country from $65 to $75.

In addition, SpaceX is now charging $700 for the Starlink dish, up from $500. In contrast, a Starlink dish costs $599 for users in the US, followed by a $110 monthly fee for service.

According to the email, SpaceX plans on instituting the $75-per-month internet fee starting on Dec. 29. “If you do not wish to continue your service, you can cancel at any time,” it says.

FIRST: That article is incorrect about how much the monthly subscription has increased. It's going up $15 or 25%, from $60 to $75. I don't know how they made this mistake when the tweet they include with the article, which I'll copy below, gives the correct information. (I'm citing this article anyway since it's the first news site I'm familiar with that has this story, going by tweets I've seen, and they'll probably correct that detail in the story later.)

SECOND: Musk is a bastard for raising the cost of Starlink in Ukraine now. But Putin will like this.

The tweet in that PC Mag story:

People will continue to defend him, will continue to use Twitter, will continue to buy Teslas, and will continue to support commercial space programs.

The Twitter piece I can sort of see, because many people, including journalists, use it to get official statements or sports scores, but you can have internet service and electric cars and social media platforms without Elon Musk.

The Pentagon should take over all of that, and cut SpaceX out of the loop, until the war is good and over.
