United States beats Iran, 1-0, to advance to round of 16

Source: Washington Post

The United States beat Iran, 1-0, on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, to secure a spot in the World Cup’s round of 16. The Americans needed to win their Group B finale to move on, and they got the result to avoid elimination after surviving some incredibly tense moments in second-half stoppage time and injuries to Christian Pulisic and Josh Sargent. The U.S. squad finished second in the group behind England and will face Group A winner Netherlands on Saturday at 10 a.m. Eastern. Continue reading for highlights from the game.

Because any email chain has news stories about it. They must be in a bubble where they can't overhear fellow employee comments and conversations. They must not be looking at ANY news sites whatsoever. But --- they are looking at DU at work where they might see a score??

where they think they can trust others to not spoil it for them. But I guess some just want to be the FIRST to spill the beans, right?

They don't open their emails? They are isolated from anyone else for the entire time they are there?

It was epic watching the Evil Empire go down. If he didn't post it, someone else would a minute later.

...pure class. And given the possible consequences the Iranian players face at home, their sportsmanship during the game was admirable.

wondering if there would be any incidents on or off the field, but as a poster above mention the teams both conducted themselves with class. One thought kept occurring to me as they panned the camera over the stands. Many young and presumably Iranian woman were in the stands, unscarved, wearing baseball hats and sporting Iranian flag gear, looking for all the world like any western nation young person cheering their team on.

I know how love of country can override all other considerations, but I couldn’t help thinking that if they walked down the streets of Tehran dressed as they were they would probably be subject to harassment, beatings, imprisonment, torture and even sexual assault and rape. The situation there makes me so angry. I’m sure these young people are fully aware (more then I, certainly), but it still left me wondering what it must be like to cheer for your nation when you know full well it would grind you to dust just for being yourself.

Anyways, well done team USA! For once this Canuck will be cheering for your team! Enjoy it while it lasts; woman’s soccer is coming soon! 😁
