Rep. Jim Clyburn survives leadership challenge
Source: NBC News
WASHINGTON Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., beat back a leadership challenge Thursday and will remain among the top House Democrats in the next Congress. Clyburn had faced a last-minute, surprise challenge from Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., for assistant leader, the No. 4 post, but the latter dropped his bid moments before the vote and endorsed Clyburn, members leaving the closed-door vote said. Cicillines decision means that Clyburn, 82, will remain in leadership at a time of generational change for the party.
Some younger Democrats had expressed frustration that Clyburn decided to stay in leadership, even after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also 82, and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, 83, announced their plans to step aside for a new generation of leaders. Clyburn, the current majority whip, has served in Democratic leadership for nearly two decades. His successful bid to remain in leadership prevented a rising young star in the party, Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Colo., from landing one of the top four jobs.
To ease tensions, Democrats opted to create a new elected leadership post by restructuring their policy and messaging arm. On Thursday, Neguse, 38, won the uncontested race to become chairman of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. He will oversee three newly elected DPCC co-chairs: Reps. Veronica Escobar of Texas, Dean Phillips of Minnesota, and Lauren Underwood of Illinois. Cicilline, who is openly gay and chairman of the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, stood up during Thursday's election and gave a rousing speech about the importance of having an LGBTQ voice at the leadership table, members said.
"The point he wanted to make is legitimate, which is that LGBTQ members are a significant part of our caucus and we did not have one in any position of leadership," Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., a Clyburn loyalist and fellow Black Caucus member, told NBC News. "I think everyone understands that we probably should have been a little more intentional during the move to get people to run for positions."

(8,329 posts)He is no more vital to 24 than Colorado where Mr Naguse is from, and probably less so as the Dems should carry Colorado there is not a chance in hell they carry South Carolina.

(13,037 posts)Rather the rep challenging him was no challenge at all. On msnbc this morning it was reported David Cicilline knew he would not get any votes so he revoked his name from the running.
Rep Clyburne's steady hand in the Hpuse is much needed given the crazy GOP w be in charge come Jan. 3rd.

(13,037 posts)"Colorado Congressman Joe Neguse has moved up the Democratic House leadership ladder. He was elected chair of the Democratic Policy and Communication Committee (DPCC), the communications arms for House Democrats, for the 118th Congress.
The Lafyette Democrat said hes honored to have been elected and is excited about the road ahead.
The messaging arm plays a really pivotal role within our House Democratic caucus because it ultimately helps our caucus develop and disseminate [a] message that resonates with the American people, he said.
Neguse has been a member of the Democratic leadership team since his first day in office. First as co-freshman rep in the 116th Congress, and then as a co-chair of the DPCC in the 117th Congress. Now Neguse will be in the higher echelons of leadership. Hes the highest ranking member of House leadership from Colorado in years and ran unopposed for the so-called chair of the chairs job and was elected by acclamation.

(128,905 posts)that position you linked to was "created" to diffuse the issue.
When you rewind back a dozen years, it's just like how Clyburn had a position "created" for him when Democrats lost the House gavel in 2010.

Democrats avoided a contentious fight for the No. 2 slot between the more moderate Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer -- the current House majority leader -- and the more liberal South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn, now the majority whip.
Under a deal brokered by Pelosi, Hoyer will become the minority whip in the next Congress -- the second Democratic slot -- while Clyburn will serve as assistant leader, a newly created third Democratic position.
Connecticut Rep. John Larson remains Democratic caucus chairman, with California Rep. Xavier Beccera rounding out the top leadership as caucus vice chair.

Neguse is not going to burn bridges but grab the opportunity. He is a fascinating figure and at 38, is building up experience.
(IMHO, Clyburn is still milking his Biden endorsement in the 2020 primaries and is probably still steamed that his choice for SCOTUS was not selected. That's politics and is why I would NEVER want to be a politician)

(13,037 posts)alignment. i agree Neguse is an up&coming but he needs to earn his battlefield scars and learn from those more experienced like Rep Clyburn. Milking his Biden endorsement or not, he's no lightweight to contend with and serves notice to the other side he can be quite skillful getting stuff done as he knows his way around. All in all i'm so proud of the way Dems have transitioned leadership to the very capable hands of younger generation members, while there's still Clyburn to lend a steady hand, and with the leaders emeritus Nancy & Steny around to guide them i feel Dems are in good hands leading up to 2024. The younger batch of leaders look like the real diverse America and what a talented bunch they are!

(17,215 posts)i know we are moving younger people into roles, BUT REPRESENTATIVE CLYBURN is just so wonderful.
We need people of color to be front and center.
