The latest: Pelosi says Democrats won't make a deal to elect McCarthy

Source: Washington Post

Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters there's no chance that Democrats will strike a deal to provide the votes to elect GOP leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker.

"You're missing the whole point," she said. It's Democrats' responsibility to find common ground with Republicans on policy and even on House rules such as the motion to vacate, she said, "but they have to select their leader first."

Pelosi also called the deadlock over electing a speaker "unfortunate" because it distracts from the $35 price cap on insulin passed last year as part of Democrats' climate package, which takes effect this month.

She can do it now.

I think it might be a good idea to unite with some R's on someone else...for important concessions. To begin:

The person must be a moderate
No killing bills by not bringing them up for a vote
Raise the debt limit

The insurrectionists win in defeating McCarthy, but that's likely to happen, anyway. But imagine the howls when the debt limit gets raised without any real problem.

Of course, the logical thing is 6 or more R's voting for Jeffries, but that's not going to happen.

It's been fun watching them implode, but at some point, we're going to need a working House of Representatives.

The RepuQs would try to take this country back a hundred years or more. Of course that wouldn't make it past the Senate, so effectively it would be a non-functioning Congress anyway.

Since teh RepuQs do not believe that government can or should work, this display shows the country how completely incompetent their party is.

To simply vote present and get Jeffries in there?

Dems win because Jeffries, the moderates win since it gives the political cover.

No matter what he promises to get Democratic support, you can bet he will renege on it the moment he gavels down the start of the new House session.
And, of course, he has already told us about all the shit he is going to spread around as leader. So, what's to save?
Absolutely nothing!

Why don't the Democrats work on a deal with the most progressive (or least Nazi) members in the House to elect someone less unfavorable?

So let's say this plan doesn't work and simply the threat of it forces a vote to finally elect McCarthy. It still can be chalked up to a win for the Democrats and a massive loss for the nutbag wing of the RQP.

Because there are none. They've (R) already said they have more in common with the bomb throwers than anyone on the "other side"

The reality is McCarthy is one of the worst. Throwing a dart at a chart of Republicans would produce a better candidate. It doesn't even have to be a member of Congress. Pick a moderate Republican that 6 of them would vote for is all they need.

Not a Dem problem, sort yourselves out you 'R' people, you wanted this!

Much smirking and the eating of popcorn by 'D' people at the moment.

Before I read this, I was of the opinion the Dems should step into the fray by proposing a solution. Now I see how that would be a mistake. They must choose their own leader.
