Source: CNN
CNN) Several people were arrested Saturday evening in downtown Atlanta during protests that came in response to a proposed police training facility and the fatal police shooting of an activist earlier in the week.
Atlanta Police Sgt. Jarius Daugherty told CNN "several arrests" were made after the demonstrations led to property damage, but did not provide an exact number of the people arrested or what property was damaged.
The protests come in response to a planned $90 million, 85-acre law enforcement training facility -- dubbed "Cop City" by its opponents -- and just days after the police killing of a 26-year-old activist near the site of the training center.

Has to be some distance (and some distinction) between being an activist - and a violent punk on steroids.

(11,372 posts)whose gun (and what type of ammo) was used in the shooting. If the cops are trying to 'pull one over' here - it won't hold up for very long.
edit: weapon (and ammo) already recovered on scene. to go ahead and argue 'throw down' means that you believe one of the troopers first shot a fellow officer with an unregistered weapon, solely with the intent of 'framing' one of the activists being rousted from the site. that's some real overkill. and some real spin.

(28,504 posts)Just as likely the LEOs fired first and trooper was either caught by friendly fire or in a response from protesters. No footage = no accountability. I dont give cops an auto-pass based on their word alone.

(3,259 posts)The officer who was shot is with the Georgia State Patrol, which doesn't issue bodycams to the majority of its officers. That's pretty mindboggling, since in this day and age every patrol officer should be wearing one, IMO. Bodycams protect everyone, officers and the public alike.
No one in an official capacity has said there isn't bodycam footage, as far as I've seen, and officers from other agencies may have been on the scene and involved. There's a very good chance one or more of those officers was wearing a bodycam. I'm reserving judgment until the issue of bodycam footage is addressed directly.

(28,504 posts)I just realized I responded to the post above the post I meant to respond to. I thought I'd read it hadn't been recorded, as if that's the end of the story, but perhaps it said recording hadn't been released. Hopefully that's the case.

(3,259 posts)Nothing official has been said about it one way or the other as far as I can find, so I feel like the responsible thing to do is wait and see what develops before coming to a conclusion on whether this shooting was justified or not. Let the investigators do their thing and see where it goes.
To be clear, I'm not referring to you when I say this, but there's no question that leaping to conclusions about police shootings is an Olympic-level sport for some DUers. Those same folks also seem to be operating under the deluded assumption that there's never a justification for police to use lethal force.

(12,615 posts)And the gun was with the guy who got shot by the cops. And the cops didnt shoot till they were shot AT. The cop certainly didnt shoot himself
But it's all a setup? Ok.
Usually the "he said/she said" scam happens when a cop shoots someone and claims the person was a threat.

Someone needs to step in and tell these guys that they are not an occupying army and we aren't insurgents.

(12,615 posts)40 yrs ago, yeah, they were mostly white. But the black middle & upper class in ATL has grown a GREAT deal over the years. And a lot of people of ALL colors are glad to see the new mayor appearing to be ready to crack down on what's been a growing crime & violence problem downtown. And as someone who has spent a lot of money there over the years, I certainly welcome it.

(11,372 posts)to an OP concerning an 'incident' in which it seems at least very likely that there was little or no police misconduct at all. So my 'comment' was directed at pointing to the fact that dogmatism, and a seeming unconcern for the unique facts of any particular case - will prevail on the part of good many posters. This thread serving as a good case in point. And as such, I believe my 'comment' was quite within bounds - and nothing like reprehensible - in either tenor or intent.
And also perhaps a good deal more 'on point' than dragging Freddie Grey into the mix. Is he connected to this case in some way?

(543 posts)If the officer WAS shot - wouldn't that just be the individual using their 2nd Amendment rights against a perceived tyrannical threat?
Isn't that what the Rightwing believe in? Shouldn't they support that and the resulting discord due to the corruption of the Authorities?
