Georgia Governor Declares State of Emergency, Activates 1,000 National Guard Troops
Source: Rolling Stone
A state of emergency has been declared in Georgia due to civil unrest in Atlanta following the police killing of an environmental activist.
Gov. Brian Kemp issued the declaration Thursday, which calls for the arrival of 1,000 members of the Georgia National Guard to subdue riot and unlawful assembly through Feb. 9, after activists threw rocks and set off fireworks at the Atlanta Police Foundation this week.
he National Guards arrival may be necessary to avert the threatened danger and to maintain peace and good order in the particular circumstances, read Kemps declaration.
The protests led to at least three businesses damaged by rocks and bricks, two police cars set on fire, and protestors arrested after allegedly being spotted with explosions, according to local reports.

Sounds premature but we'll see.

(18,581 posts)There's a pile of explosive emotions and social upheaval sitting on a powder keg in Atlanta. Kemp just threw a book of matches in it.
It's like him to order live ammunition just to make sure the situation grows into a national disgrace.

(53,003 posts)That happened in my neighborhood following the death of George Floyd. We were without grocery stores for a year, the banks closed and left, and we still don't have a drug store. It left us a food dessert. The National Guard is necessary. It's all fine and good to think that behavior should proceed unfettered if you don't live there. It's not so great not being able to get food and medicine when you do.
In the case of Minneapolis, many of the fires were started by Boogoloo boys and other RW infiltrators. You want them to have free reign too?

(18,581 posts)And it's true I wouldn't like it in my back yard, or down the street for that matter.
I live 30 miles from Kent State and was 18 when the Ohio National Guard killed four students on campus. Governor Rhodes did exactly the wrong thing to handle it.
And I trust the spirits of Old Dixie to drive Kemp to do the same wrong thing as well to quell the anger in Atlanta. It's written in his DNA.

(12,410 posts)They should have known what was going to happen because the rioters SADI they were coming.
And in what's become the norm, most arrested aren't even FROM All or even GA

(4,416 posts)To get 1,000 soldiers all activated, in uniform, and turned out ready to go do a riot patrol. Im thinking at least 24 hours. Gotta make phone calls, alerts, etc.
You arent going to actually see any Guard soldiers inside the city until at least noon on Friday, and more likely, not until 6 pm or later Friday.

(8,944 posts)The police story that Teran fired first at a Georgia State Trooper, one of dozens of heavily armed police raiding the encampments in the Weelaunee Forest, has been met with universal disbelief by those who knew the young activist. Likewise, others well-acquainted with false narratives supplied by police to justify their illegal actions will say the names of Kathryn Johnson, Anthony Hill, Jamarion Robinson or Jimmy Atchison. When they were killed, the police account was proven untrue.
Tortuguita, a nonbinary person of Venezuelan heritage, had been engaged for many months in building a resistance community with other Defenders and neighboring residents in the forested land, owned by Atlanta but located in DeKalb County.

The APF has paid for thousands of surveillance cameras throughout Atlanta, making it one of the most surveilled cities in the country. As a result of public pressure after a number of suspicious deaths by police, Atlanta police and other local departments are required to have cameras on, when dealing with the public. However, the Georgia State Troopers who advanced on the tent where Manuel Teran was sleeping only have cameras in their cars to record traffic stops, and so the claim is that there is no video to show what really happened..

(12,410 posts)The gun found with him is the same caliber as the one used to shoot the cop.
I doubt the cops shot one of their own to set ups this guy.

(2,585 posts)Just the opening rounds. Just wait until the majority wants action on climate change.
Also dont forget the Bush administration contribution to this incident. As far as I know they were the first government officials in the United States to label environmentalists as terrorists.

(12,410 posts)And yes, I support this move because we've seen what happens when you just sit by & do nothing. ATL is the hub of the state & it doesn't need to turn into a war zone over a training center. And as I noted in another post, most arrested last week aren't even FROM GA. They're just the usual instigators.

(2,585 posts)I was really thinking of the original incident not the response to current situation.
I hate when protests go that way because it justifies crackdowns on legitimate protests and it usually hurts people who have nothing to do with the problem.

(12,410 posts)Both have spoken about how we all say police need more training. This facility is to do just that; train officers. We have to have cops, so they need to be trained. This site was picked YEARS ago.

(7,392 posts)But the actions of the activists look to play right into Gov. Kemp's hands making it highly unconstructive. It surely doesn't move the cause forward. The best antidote now would be to lay a little low to let things calm down a bit and make the Governor's action look premature and foolish and abandon the violence as the protests resume.
