LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Cindy Williams, who played Shirley opposite Penny Marshall's Laverne on the popular sitcom "Laverne & Shirley," has died, her family said Monday.

Williams died in Los Angeles at age 75 on Wednesday after a brief illness, her children, Zak and Emily Hudson, said in a statement released through family spokeswoman Liza Cranis.

"The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed," the statement said. "Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved."

Williams also starred in director George Lucas' 1973 film "American Graffiti" and director Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" from 1974.

"Laverne & Shirley" intro

Update: We ran into her at Magic Mountain in Southern California while we were on our honeymoon. She was with some child performers and she insisted on introducing us to them. But it was great to meet her.

And to think we were just watching "Laverne and Shirley" on one of the free streaming services this morning. Sigh.

was also 75 when she died in 2018. Most of the cast of Laverne & Shirley are gone now, as well as Garry Marshall who was one of the creators. Feels like an era is passing.

She was friends with my next-door neighbor who was Lynn Stewart (Miss Yvonne from Pee-Wee's Playhouse). Cindy lived in Malibu but visited Lynn occasionally. She introduced us to Cindy during one of her visits. She was very nice and even adopted some kittens that were strays in our apartment complex. Sad she is no longer with us.

I was a regular watcher of and really enjoyed Lavern and Shirley.

Her kids, Emily and Zak are half-siblings with Kate Hudson and her brother Oliver Hudson. Bill Hudson was married to Goldie Hawn and then to Cindy Williams having two children with both of them. He also had another daughter, Lalainia Hudson with someone named Caroline Graham.......

She was an absolute delight. She was admiring a pin I was wearing. I told her I made it at an art school in Pasadena and she wanted to know where she could take the class.

So sad to hear of this.
