Ukraine demands emergency UN meeting over Putin nuclear plan

Source: Associated Press

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s government on Sunday called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to “counter the Kremlin’s nuclear blackmail” after Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed plans to station tactical atomic weapons in Belarus.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry condemned the move in a statement Sunday and demanded an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

“Ukraine expects effective action to counter the Kremlin’s nuclear blackmail by the U.K., China, the U.S. and France,” the statement read, saying these countries “have a special responsibility” regarding nuclear aggression.

Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, tweeted Sunday that Putin’s announcement was “a step towards internal destabilization” of Belarus that maximized “the level of negative perception and public rejection” of Russia and Putin in Belarusian society. The Kremlin, Danilov added, “took Belarus as a nuclear hostage.”

to specific targets in Ukraine from Russia I would assume. Does he just not want ant retaliation on actual nuclear armaments in Russia? Like if the UN or Nato takes out nuclear armaments they are going to go to Belarus and so Putin gets to have a 'proxy Armageddon' in Ukraine and Belarus.

I suspect. I have a couple of thoughts, tough.

It's a shorter distance for attack origin leaving a lot less time to intercept.

Defender may be reluctant to fire on a third country, but I think that wouldn't last long.

The more he uses them as bluster, the more I suspect his nuclear armament is more like his moldy old tanks, poorly maintained, sketchy when it comes to reliability.

He's bluffing because he knows he can't use them and survive. He's also getting nervous because he's been exposed and has no place to run when the shit starts flying. I think he's more scared than anything else and that's just as dangerous as blind rage which is the other option.

The missiles in Belarus don't make much sense from a military perspective.

So yes, he is desperate and bluffing.

his nuclear armaments are in as bad shape as the weapons he's been using up to now. He's shown his hand. The only thing he has is saber rattling. And, just like Trump with his "final battle," Putin as the boy who cried Wolf will find him standing alone in a morass of his own making.

But the one thing he can do is completely destabilize Belarus. It's the one country (I think) that's as pro-Russia as it can be. There are, of course, those in the country who want democracy, but the country is ruled as a dictatorship. If Putin can rile up the people in Belarus, he can start "actions" there under cover of quelling the violence. That might give him time enough to think of how to get out of this mess with his life, country, and rep intact.

Then again, it gives him another, closer quarter from which to attack Ukraine, keeping the Muscovites in the dark, so to speak.

I can see the concept in the first one but I don't agree. The second is also an interesting perspective that was down on my list as more of a given with hiding things from the folks back home. I tend to agree on that part, it may be what he's thinking.

On the Belarusian thing, I think there's more opposition there than is spoken about. There was an entire battalion of soldiers who volunteered for Ukraine and the rail line were sabotaged to hinder operations from there, I think that's why pootin hasn't been operating from there since early on when there was so much opposition from both sides of that border. I suspect that if he tried to move nukes to Belarus, the people would stop him from succeeding.

Just speculation, of course.

more aggressive posture last week saying they may have to enter the conflict if Ukraine begins to struggle and Russia's acceptance that Finland and Sweden are both more than likely NATO bound.

Since "vinegar" (i.e. You're drafted. Get your untrained ass to the front and be cannon fodder.) didn't work out too well, Russia's now trying "honey" to fill the ranks. By Russian standards, that's desperate as hell. They just don't do nice unless they absolutely have no other choice.

Tactical nukes to Belarus is just as desperate.
