His being elected offers a lot more possibilities to a wider field of candidates on the Dem side, I hope!

I was betting against his retirement but nypolitic (hopefully close enough for city work) was all over this with some interesting analysis as to who may or may not get in.

I.e. Larry Hogan, the two-term moderate Republican who admitted did a decent job shying away from the Trumpist wing of his party.

He was a very popular governor and remains very popular to most MD republicans, many MD Independents and some MD Democrats. He would be formidable.

Though, his candidacy would likely be dragged down by the Republikkans that are there
How many non-aligned and/or Democrats would vote Republican knowing that Tommy Tubberville could head a committee?

Probably the only republican who has a chance to win there. Has plenty of name recognition and was popular enough to serve 2 terms as Governor there.

But it would become another competitive race.

Has plenty of name recognition and was popular enough to serve 2 terms as Governor there.

Which just ended a few months ago because he was term-limited.

He only recently declined to run for President, but he was considering it... so he still wants to be in the game. He has previously said that he didn't want to run for Senate... but that was back when he would have had to run against a popular incumbent. And open seat race might well change that.

One of the hills he'd have to climb is convincing people in Maryland that it would be okay if Rand Paul and Tommy Tubberville held power in the majority again and that it would be okay to hold up Supreme Court appointments by Biden so we could get another Alito-type on the bench

It's putting our party and America as a nation at risk. Republicans are making no such mistake, and they know that as each of our oldest, longest-serving lawmakers finally retire, there will be a power vacuum, which they fully intend to take advantage of.
