Add New Mexico governor Susana Martinez (R) to the list of Republican leaders upset with Mitt Romney's claim that President Obama won the election by doling out "gifts" to minorities, youth, and women.

"That unfortunately is what sets us back as a party -- our comments that are not thought through carefully," Martinez told Yahoo's Chris Moody. Martinez, who previously criticized Romney's "47 percent" remarks in September, added that his fundraiser video was a "ridiculous statement."

As a Republican governor of Mexican descent who won all but four counties in a Democratic state, Martinez has ideas for how the party can reach voters who traditionally support Democrats. But it's going to take some work--and a touch of humility--from her colleagues.

"Republicans need to stop making assumptions, and they need to start talking to younger people, people of color, and ask them--not talk to them--ask them, What is it that we can do better? How do we earn your vote? How do we earn the ability for you to see that we can be the party that will make your life better and that of your children?" Martinez said in an interview after the conference here. "But we can't be the ones that come and tell them how things are going to be and how we have all the solutions."

In order to make inroads with minority voters--particularly Hispanics--Martinez urged Republicans to pursue immigration reform and to begin grassroots outreach now instead of waiting until an election year to seek votes.

"We need to embrace them not just at election time. We visit them, and they don't appreciate that. And I don't blame them for not appreciating that. We should not visit them when we need their vote and then walk away," she said. "And then four years go by and we go visit them again. We have to make them part of the solution, and the way you do that is by listening to them. And then making that part of, 'how do we do this together to make our lives all better?'

It's kinda funny. Last night I stumbled across an old copy of Barry Goldwater's "Conscience of a Conservative." I might have to read it just to see how far the current GOP has strayed even from his ideas/ideals.

11. Gov. Martinez Is Too Kind To Republicans

When she claims that Republicans talk to them each election cycle. I didn't hear Romney talking to Hispanics or other minorities during the election. I heard him talking to older, white males. When the discussion mentioned issues important to those groups I heard talk about making conditions so miserable people would self-deport or the 47% that only want government handouts and the dog whistle comments, especially from the likes of John Sununu. That is talking to older, white males. And Romney got a higher percentage of those voters than McCain did 4 years earlier. Here Gov. Martinez is just trying to sugar coat the larger problems faced by the Republican party. Besides, she bypasses the policy issues that so turn off so many voters like cuts to vital services and trickle down economics that don't work.
