Mo. man charged with plotting 'Twilight' mass shooting
Source: USA Today
4:47PM EST November 16. 2012 - A 20-year-old Missouri man was charged Friday with planning a mass shooting this weekend at either a screening of the latest Twilight movie or at a local Walmart.
Blaec Lammers, of Bolivar, is accused of buying assault rifles and more than 400 rounds of ammunition in a plot mimicking the July mass shooting that killed 12 and wounded 57 at an Aurora, Colo., theater showing the premiere of the latest Batman movie, the Springfield News-Leader reports.
Lammers was charged with first-degree assault, making a terroristic threat and armed criminal action. He is being held on $500,000 bail.
His mother contacted police Thursday, saying Lammers had bought assault weapons and ammunition, and was concerned he "may have intentions of shooting people at the movie," Breaking Dawn Part 2, according to court documents. He also stated he might instead target a Walmart store "because if he ran out of ammunition he would be able to break the glass where the ammunition is stored and get more, writes the News-Leader, published by Gannett, USA TODAY's parent.

I'm sick of this! Assault rifles! 400 rounds!
At least they stopped him from doing it.

(61,695 posts)a great idea if someone with a concealed carry permit were to open fire at the perp in a crowded dark theater.
Yeah, right. What could go wrong?

(15,374 posts)Surely such would make the news, resulting in citable evidence that it's a real and important problem.
If I'm missing anything else, perhaps you can be more clear?

(53,342 posts)I was obviously engaging in hyperbole to the statement in the previous post "What could go wrong?" which was obviously meant to be sarcasm.

(15,374 posts)You appeared (in my befuddled head) to be serious. Sometimes it's hard to tell around here, and my current personal circumstances (nothing life-threatening or dangerous) have had me rather distracted.
My apology for misconstrueing what you were saying.

(212 posts)It's a less than 30 minute drive from where I live in Springfield. This is too close to home for me having a teenage daughter who would have been at one of the local screenings had we not been too broke for her to go. Scary.

(12 posts)While I do support some gun legislation to make sure they only go to the sane and non-criminals, I do also support the law-abiding citizens right to protect himself.
Glad his mother did the right thing. Saved, possibly, many lives.

She probably saved a lot of people. It's better for her son that she did it, too.

(10,427 posts)What is it with people wanting to become mass shooters? Maybe we shouldn't mention the perpetrators' names, so they don't get the publicity that they're seeking.
Besides, even Twi-Hards don't deserve to be shot. Then I would have to have sympathy for them. They're too much fun to mock now.

(4,522 posts)Not just easy access to guns - the 24/7 news media stroke the sh*t out of these events. Cover the 'news' but stop with all the publicity and attention.

(1,418 posts)I thought (according to the police, FBI, etc.) these guys "can't be stopped", "can't be surveilled" prior to committing a rampage killing like The Joker in Aurora??

(15,374 posts)The ones that keep their plans covert? Got a crystal ball?
Iggy
(1,418 posts)but of course you have to be willing to use the tool, and admit you're already doing it.
Big mouthed doofs like The Joker were in fact broadcasting what they were planning-- via various pathetic websites they frequent-- and the dozens of orders of guns, ammo, gear which he had delivered to his home and workplace-- all paid for via credit card.
again, the notion this can't be monitored/tracked is about as dumb/naive as it gets.

(5,169 posts)Remember, folks, if the government did a better job of tracking people's communications and purchases, looking for dangerous patterns, we would all be much safer.
Iggy
(1,418 posts)a high level of surveillance-- it's already happening. please tell me you're not a totally naive rube who thinks if a couple hundred of us send a letter complaining about this to our congressman-- that the practice will actually stop.
you've got to be kidding me.

(6,801 posts)and for that matter the Aurora shooter could have been stopped if the student affairs office had read his manifesto. Instead they ignored it.
So again it would seem that improved mental health access is more effective at stopping these sorts of things than banning guns.
Iggy
(1,418 posts)laws preventing the mentally ill from purchasing/owning guns and ammo needs to be strictly enforced.
4th law of robotics
(6,801 posts)is that they have to be diagnosed first.
I don't think you'll find anyone here arguing for the rights of the severely (and violently) mentally ill to own guns.
The problem is identifying them before hand (usually the only indication is the shooting) and limiting it to only those who are a real threat and not expanding the definition of mentally ill to such an extent that it becomes a de-facto ban (like say by defining the desire to own a gun as a mental illness).
Iggy
(1,418 posts)on two wars of choice.. I think we can find the resources needed to identify the mentally ill among us.. it's not all that difficult.
Bogus-ness like "it's too hard" or "too expensive" is just that: BOGUS.
