Rep. Jim Jordan demands DOJ memo outlining scope of Trump probe
Source: NBC News
WASHINGTON House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, a top Trump ally, is calling on the Justice Department to provide lawmakers with internal documents laying out the scope of special counsel Jack Smiths investigation into the former presidents handling of classified documents found last year at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
In a letter first reported by NBC News, Jordan told Attorney General Merrick Garland that his committee was requesting an unredacted copy of the memorandum outlining the scope of Mr. Smiths probes regarding President Trump and any supporting documentation related to his appointment as special counsel.
The letter from Jordan, one of Trumps most ardent defenders on Capitol Hill, comes a day after attorneys for the former president met with Smith and others at Justice Department headquarters and the same week the grand jury investigating Trumps handling of classified documents is expected to meet again.
Jordan, R-Ohio, said he is seeking the Justice Department documents by June 20. Congressional Republicans are ramping up pressure on the Justice Department over Smiths probes into both the classified documents and allegations of Trumps interference in the 2020 presidential election, which he still falsely claims was tainted by fraud.

He's violating this -
Whoever, with intent to avoid, evade, prevent, or obstruct compliance, in whole or in part, with any civil investigative demand duly and properly made under the Antitrust Civil Process Act, willfully withholds, misrepresents, removes from any place, conceals, covers up, destroys, mutilates, alters, or by other means falsifies any documentary material, answers to written interrogatories, or oral testimony, which is the subject of such demand; or attempts to do so or solicits another to do so; or
Whoever corruptly, or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication influences, obstructs, or impedes or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due and proper administration of the law under which any pending proceeding is being had before any department or agency of the United States, or the due and proper exercise of the power of inquiry under which any inquiry or investigation is being had by either House, or any committee of either House or any joint committee of the Congress
Shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years or, if the offense involves international or domestic terrorism (as defined in section 2331), imprisoned not more than 8 years, or both.
considering that his Congressional "inquiry" into this criminal matter being carried out by the Executive branch is improper (IMHO).

He must know something is coming down imminently and thus being a part of the criminal cabal, he has joined in with the rest of the insurrection defenders who are circling the wagons.

Your post on the law is great, thanks. It's just the intent part of this demand that he can deny. If the DOJ has evidence of his (or his colleagues') intent, they will have done this nation a great service.

So far that I have seen, I don't think he has tried to mess with NY AG Letitia James' fraud case against 45, which has a trial that will be the first of all of the most serious ones, this coming October. Maybe because of the "criminal" vs "civil" distinction where the fraud one is "civil" (he seemed to also stay away from the E. Jean Carroll case too).
Meaning I expect he is already trying to come up with some way to obstruct Fani Willis for her GA state investigation (which is "criminal" ).

(4,741 posts)"Trumps outside legal team is taking cues from Jim Jordan, adopting many of his arguments and even asking a federal judge to obtain documents from Jordan to build their legal case against Democrats myriad investigations targeting the president."
Did any of these clowns attend law school at all?
They can get some documents from the prosecution to build their case. Not all, but not an insubstantial amount, either. It's called discovery. File the necessary motions to get the documents, and what you can't get, well, too bad. Deal with it and move on. Sheesh.
The defense can also get documents from sympathetic witnesses that they need to build cases. They don't even have to go through a judge for it. The witness can voluntarily cough it up. So why would they need to go through a federal judge to get information from Gymbo, if he's already on their side? Have his boss make a call, get what you want from him. Well, if he's legally allowed to have it, you can get it. And you better let the prosecution know you have such information, because discovery works both ways.
I suspect that all this whining about getting something from Gymbo is nothing but a desperate straw-grab to get something they couldn't get through even the generous bounds of discovery.
I'm an idiot, and I know this much about law.

President Trump did nothing wrong and his home was raided.
Rachael Rollins, a Biden appointed U.S. Attorney, lied to investigators and may have improperly sought to influence an election, but Merrick Garland refused to prosecute.
Americans are tired of the double standard.
