A woman has been taken into custody 4 days after Ajike 'AJ' Owens was fatally shot after knocking
Source: CNN
A woman was taken into custody Tuesday night in connection with the death of 35-year-old Ajike AJ Owens, who was fatally shot last week in central Florida after knocking on a neighbors door, a sheriffs office spokesperson said.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods told reporters Monday his office was rigorously investigating the case, and that authorities were working to determine whether the deadly force was justified or not.
Owens relatives have said they want the person who killed her arrested and charged.
They say the shooter, identified by police reports only as a 58-year-old White woman, harassed the Black mother and her children and had called them racial slurs prior to Fridays killing in Marion County outside Ocala.

Looks like the Sheriff was finally shamed into doing something, but it's not clear what if any charges there will be. The woman shot and killed AJ Owens through a closed door.

I hope jailing her sends a clear message to would-be Zimmermans out there that this shit is murder/manslaughter that will get them put in jail.

(51,378 posts)AJ Owens' mother, Pamela Dias, stated in an interview with MSNBC that this was not the first incident involving this particular neighbor, as confrontations with her had happened numerous times. Sheriff Billy Woods also confirmed in a press conference that police had been called to the address around six to eight times in two and a half years.
On June 6, 2023, the family and friends of AJ Owens held a press conference to demand Justice for AJ. Pamela Dias narrated what had happened and revealed that Susan Lorincz had harassed her grandchildren by calling them profanities like "The N-Word," "The B-Word," and "Slaves" before taking the life of her daughter, who never posed any imminent threat to anyone.
One of AJ's friends also spoke in the press conference about how the landlord had allowed children to play on the field as long as they cleaned up after themselves. Therefore, as a tenant, Susan did not have the authority to ask them to leave. She also stated that the community will not sleep or rest until justice was served.

And it's not Lorincz's land. As AJ's family explains at the above link, the field belongs to the owner of the apartment complex, Lorincz is only a renter there. The landlord had given the kids permission to play on the field.

Dias, who spoke at a news conference a day after a 58-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the death, said another child also blamed himself because he was unable to perform CPR on his mother.
Grandma, grandma. I couldnt save her, Dias recalled the 12-year-old boy telling her.

(1,926 posts)This will be heavily scrutinized and a lot of incriminating details are likely to come out. And a lot of heat will be placed on the local law enforcement to do their jobs correctly. Not to mention that there is a history of racial abuse which means this should be prosecuted as a hate crime, also.

(32,829 posts)snip-"Susan Louise Lorincz, 58, was charged Tuesday with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault, the Marion County Sheriffs Office said."
snip-"Following a Major Crimes Unit investigation which included interviews with Owenss children and other witnesses and uncovered surveillance footage and other forensic and digital evidence detectives concluded that over a period of time, Lorincz had become angry at Owens children, who were playing in a field close to her home.
On Friday night, according to the sheriffs office, Lorincz engaged in an argument with the children and was overhead yelling at them by a neighbor, throwing a roller skate at Owenss 10-year-old son that hit him in the toe. She also swung at Owenss son and his brother with an umbrella when they attempted to speak to her, the office said. When the children notified their mother, Owens approached Lorinczs home, knocked on the door multiple times, and demanded that Lorincz come outside, the sheriffs office said."

(6,703 posts)There would have been too many cops doing too much bullying, being too afraid for their safety. Someone may have reached a breaking point and acting out. That could have caused a reaction which would have been too much for the cops who'd call for more cops. Someone's property may then get damaged, and the media would talk of a riot while guns get drawn and open warfare starts in the street.
The sheriff may well have been acting prudently, playing the scenario out in his head, opting to allowing a time for hearts to quit racing and passions to calm a bit before returning to the scene and arresting the murderer.
BTW, if this were to become a George Floyd moment it would then be upon the Biden people to bring order, no one else can because too many don't even want to. These are tense times and way too many folks have guns without guidance. Imagine waking up from your Fox induced coma to find you've bought a gun you can't afford for a reason that doesn't make sense and committed a homicide you don't understand.

(35,816 posts)Maybe that's what the sheriff really was - prudent. But I don't think he'd have been prudent if the races were reversed. Not that one. Not in Ocala.

and so let's check in as our intrepid sheriff's mind runs along, all awhir.........
option 1. Lemme see. I could leave the neighborhood alone and delay arresting the black lady out of prudence? I'll never get re-elected.
option 2. I could do what my daddy shore wood'a done. Go in armed for bear, tempers, crosses and shot guns blazing, and there's a possibility, however slight, I could end up in a federal prison. Depends on whether my deputies are off their meds again that day. Dang minimum wage. And dang cell phone cameras, too. I could call on the governor, he's a true believer when it comes to supporting the crazies, but he's in Iowa again (or New Hampshire, all the Yankee states look the same).

(127,331 posts)and apparently all of the properties around there (including that of the shooter, the victim, and the guest) are rented and are part of an "apartment complex", so the "field" is not "owned" by residents. The guest mentioned the apartment complex included homes that were "quadruplexes".
I grew up not far from a couple streets that had rental "quad" houses (that were like 2 twins built side by side and back to back so they each shared a side wall and a back wall with another house), and where they fronted either of the streets. So although the dwellers could use the front and side yards, they didn't "own" them.
