Ukraine launches counteroffensive against Russia
Source: NBC News
ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine Ukraine's military has launched its long-awaited counteroffensive against Russian forces, one senior officer and one soldier near the front lines told NBC News.
After months of buildup to a campaign that could prove crucial in Kyivs bid to reclaim occupied territory, a wave of attacks on Thursday focused on the war's southeastern front lines and appeared to represent a significant new push.
This new phase of the war, which many see as crucial to persuading Western allies to renew their support, comes as Ukraine grapples with the fallout from the destruction of a critical dam in the region.
Ukraines government has consistently said there would be no public announcement of the start of the offensive. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing military operations, while a Ukrainian military spokesman declined to comment.

I hope they have plenty of surprises planned, too. Clear the Russians out of Transnistria, for example.

(111,255 posts)Russian casualties skyrocketed from 400+/day to nearly 900/day. Equipment losses also increased. Russians in Ukraine are not having a nice time.
We vaguely know where it is, but that's all. Fighting intensity has increased at several points along the front. It looks Ukraine is hoping to separate the Russians into sections, destroying supply lines and communication (which is already poor).
The dam failure, whether it was MIHOP or LIHOP, has given them a renewed sense of purpose.

(3,332 posts)I knew even their first-line units were subpar, but I had no idea their general staff would perform so badly out of the gate, let alone continue on with their poorly-led offensives despite one defeat after another to the point they've been inviting the long-awaited counter-attack.
Damn, a generation on both sides are being ground into dust by the abject and stubborn stupidity of one man, Putin.

dug-in fortifications to get away from the water, plus they figured Ukraine would not come from that direction.
