This sounds like it could be a case of unintentional fentanyl poisoning. I want to know what happened to these Marines.

PENDER COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Deputies in Pender County say it looks like three Marines found dead in a car this past weekend died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Lance Corporal Tanner Kaltenberg, 19, from Madison, Wisconsin, Lance Corporal Merax Dockery, 23, from Pottawatomie, Oklahoma, and Lance Corporal Ivan Garcia, 23, from Naples, Florida were found in a car parked at a Speedway convenience store on U.S. 17 in Hampstead early Sunday.
All three were motor vehicle operators with Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group at Camp Lejeune.
Deputies say one of the mothers called them saying her son did not arrive on a flight home to Oklahoma the night before. She told deputies that a supervisor in her sons unit said someone was en route to the convenience store to see if they could locate the Marine.

(36,827 posts)But it is fairly common for exhaust systems to crack and develop leaks. Piston aircraft typically are heated by directing ventilation air across the muffler and CO2 poisoning is fairly common. I have the muffler on my plane inspected every year and still use a CO2 detector in the cabin during the winter months.

(28,811 posts)that's hinky though to me. It's hot - did they stop to sleep and kept the car running for the AC? I don't know, it's crazy. I hope a full investigation is conducted and the full circumstances can be made public. Three people in that car. i don't know. tragic no matter how you slice it.
Under these circumstances I would not be surprised if toxicology is still pending.
