Judge denies Hobby Lobby's birth control case
By Tim Talley
Oklahoma City A federal judge Monday rejected Hobby Lobby Stores Inc.'s request to block part of the federal health care overhaul that requires the arts and craft supply company to provide insurance coverage for the morning-after and week-after birth control pills.
In a 28-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton denied a request by Hobby Lobby to prevent the government from enforcing portions of the health care law mandating insurance coverage for contraceptives the company's Christian owners consider objectionable.
The Oklahoma City-based company and a sister company, Mardel Inc., sued the government in September, claiming the mandate violates the owners' religious beliefs. The owners contend the morning-after and week-after birth control pills are tantamount to abortion because they can prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in a woman's womb. They also object to providing coverage for certain kinds of intrauterine devices.
At a hearing earlier this month, a government lawyer said the drugs do not cause abortions and that the U.S. has a compelling interest in mandating insurance coverage for them.

(50,562 posts)Hobby Lobby and Chic-fil-A being owned by rabid fundamentalists is a frequent subject of discussion here, and it pretty much ends with twenty or thirty people promising never to go in the place again.

(131,105 posts)that while churches and other religious organizations have been granted constitutional protection from the birth-control provisions, "Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations."
"Plaintiffs have not cited, and the court has not found, any case concluding that secular, for-profit corporations such as Hobby Lobby and Mardel have a constitutional right to the free exercise of religion," the ruling said.
Heaton wrote that "the court is not unsympathetic" to the problems cited by Hobby Lobby and their owners, the Green family. He said the health care law's expansion of employer obligations "results in concerns and issues not previously confronted by companies or their owners."
"The question of whether the Greens can establish a free exercise constitutional violation by reason of restrictions or requirements imposed on general business corporations they own or control involves largely uncharted waters," Heaton wrote.'
Hobby Lobby's attorney said the companies' owners will appeal.

(6,810 posts)...they need to shut the fuck up. Not every fertilized egg results in a pregnancy, regardless of whether or not birth control is used.

(5,105 posts)Take up the birth costs, and related complications? Pay for time off to have the baby?
I don't know, but I would suspect the answer is NO.
Would they support measures to keep the baby healthy, such as making sure s/he had everything needed to be a healthy baby? Enough food for mother and baby? A safe place to live?
I'm not even thinking about after the first year of the baby's life, but would they do ANYTHING to help out the mother and child, after they went out of their way to make sure the mother had to become a mother? I seriously doubt it, with great reasons to do so.

(6,960 posts)Unfortunately I occasionally have to buy paint for art at Hobby Lobby ... because it is close.
But this company has NO customer service; often times there is Christian music playing in the background; I have heard employees complain about 'preaching' at the company Christmas party; I remember seeing a few years ago many stacks of books for sale written by the companies founder the subject being how Jesus made him a success.
But the truth is that cheap crap and low wages is what has made Hobby Lobby a 'success'.
Yup. It makes me angry that a private company like Hobby Lobby looks for any excuse to screw its employees -- and to use religion as a rationale to screw the employees is even worse.

(3,445 posts)Within the last year they announced that their starting wage would be $14/hour. Better than average.
I don't shop HL much anymore, mainly because there aren't any stores close by. Thirty years ago they were a great store, carried spinning wheels and looms and such as well as basic stuff. Now half their stores are cheap Chinese decorator crap that they sell at ridiculous prices.

(5,668 posts)at crazy prices. so true. so they can pay the chinese to force it's people to have an abortion. seriously why any Christian in their right might would defend Hobby Lobby is beyond me. They are just using this because of $$$$$$

(13,921 posts)in the wall of my belief that benefits should not be provided by employers. Pay me what I am worth and let me chose what to do with my money. And butt the hell out of whatever it is that I chose unless it effects my ability to function in the roll you pay me to provide. Particularly now with the chance of building a valid health care provision system out of the ACA.

about Hobby Lobby pleading to avoid millions in fines it'll be forced to pay after being forced to pay for the abortion pill mandate. Yeah if I google like what the fuck is an Abortion Pill Mandate. No such thing!!! This is not an abortion pill. Way extreme to be calling it an abortion pill. First it had to have a heartbeat now it doesn't need one and for the Hypocrites defending Hobby Lobby , most of Hobby Lobby's furniture if not all comes from what country? China. the king of FORCED abortions. That and they covered them for years. It's a freaking political stunt. But then again they believe Obama is Muslim so ho hum.. SO no coverage for birth control in the USA but by golly we'll force out workforce behind the scenes to have them.
