Inquiry widens into Gulf of Mexico dolphins' killings
The New York Times

ATLANTA — An investigation into the mysterious killing of dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico is gaining momentum, with a federal agent now in charge of the case and a $30,000 reward for catching the killer or killers.

Since the summer, six dead dolphins have washed ashore with bullet wounds, severed fins and jaws, and stab wounds. The latest was a dolphin found off the coast of Mississippi with its lower jaw missing.
Whether the deaths were caused by the same group or person is not known, but federal investigators are turning to the public for help.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has called on fishermen and beachgoers to report any dead or injured dolphins. Forensic experts at the agency are testing the slugs removed from the animals to determine if they come from the same gun.

More than 700 dolphins have been found dead of various causes in the Gulf since February 2010. But scientists say that deliberate, violent deaths are rare.

“These are senseless, repugnant acts,” said Moby Solangi, executive director of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Miss. “These dolphins are mutilated in a way that no animal is in the wild.”

and prosecute them to the full extent of the law and the harshest penalty available. There is NO excuse for this. Dolphins are highly evolved, intelligent gentle animals.

Why in the world would anyone want to injure or kill such beautiful animals?

"Dolphins are highly evolved, intelligent gentle animals."

Unlike the human animals that are killing them!

Beautiful picture.
Thanks.

They really are very remarkable animals and I just don't understand how anyone could harm or kill such a beautiful creature.

That is another picture of beauty in motion!

I guess we live in a world that for some, and I hope it is only a few, destroying life
has no meaning to them! Some just have the need to take from us what is good, precious and truly beautiful. So very Sad.

The Dolphins are Magnificent!

is mentally sick beyond words. Dolphins like to travel alongside boats, so the asshole that did this was probably within arms reach of the docile mammals. These actions piss me off to no end! Fucking psychopaths!

Some of them feel they compete with dolphins for fish.
The missing lower jaw may be significant,
as this would prevent the dolphin from eating.

This is pure speculation on my part,
beyond being familiar with the Gulf Coast and some of the local fishermen
who HATE dolphins,
I have no hard evidence to support my speculation.

Basic story is this...
Big corporations tell the small fisherman that regulations are BAD.
Big corporations fish the oceans clean.
Big corporations move on to other resources that can be stripmined and local fishermen are left with a collapsed economy.
The sequel is that fishermen want someone or something to blame and begin taking it out of other wildlife (canadian harp seal hunt is another example).
I once found an injured sea lion on a beach in CA and couldn't get anyone to come. Next time I'll say it is a stellar's sea lion (endangered) and it will get a more rapid response.

This is a sick and demented act. I cannot imagine what they are doing this for, besides kicks.....and that makes them useless pieces of shit.
