Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher will resign early, leaving House majority hanging by a thread

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., who announced last month he would not run for re-election, plans to resign from Congress early, according to two sources familiar with his decision.

Gallagher’s departure before the end of his term in January is another blow to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Republicans, who have been struggling to govern and demonstrate stability this Congress.

Neither Gallagher nor his office responded to a request for comment. It wasn’t immediately clear when he plans to step down.

Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., who also is not seeking re-election, is resigning from Congress on Friday, cutting the GOP’s minuscule majority to 218-213. If Gallagher quits soon, that majority would further shrink to 217-213, meaning Republicans could only afford a single defection on any vote if Democrats vote no.

It was almost too much to hope for, but I had a feeling that it was true. The republican party is really unraveling rapidly and I think we may see more in the future.

HE would be great as Speaker! I look forward to that, BIGTIME!!!

Besides, this can only be that much more DEMORALIZING for the Repubs. Long slow torture having to watch their “ownership” of the House slowly and agonizingly slipping away…

and talk about how to soak their donors and plead for more rubles.

(R)epuglicons are totally incapable of any sincere introspection - they rely on their lobbyists and paymasters.

Sometimes I’m tempted to think the GOP has blinders surgically attached.

They think it’s their “royal due” or some such thing. That they’re simply divinely-installed as leaders when they’re nothing but pretenders to the throne.

I sneer at their tears. They’re getting what they deserve: watching their House dominance slowly and agonizingly slipping away. Slowly, and looking more inevitably than ever.

... was elected as a Democrat in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. I sure hope he appoints a Democrat to replace Mike Gallagher to fill out the term. It is Gov. Evers' duty as Governor to choose the best person for the job. If that person happens to be a Democrat, it shouldn't matter.

Give me what I want or I resign and you lose the majority!

The one's in purplish districts have a bit of an edge there since they have less job security anyway.
