GOP lawmaker has strong words for other Republicans as infighting revs up

Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, called some of his fellow lawmakers “scumbags” on Sunday as GOP infighting has reached new heights in the House.

Gonzales, appearing on CNN’s "State of the Union," was asked whether he believes House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., will survive an effort to remove him from his leadership post. The House was effectively frozen for weeks last year after a handful of Republican rebels voted alongside Democrats to remove then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., has threatened to try to do the same to Johnson.

Gonzales had some sharp words to say about his colleagues: most notably, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. "It's my absolute honor to be in Congress, but I serve with some real scumbags," Gonzales said, alleging that Matt Gaetz sexually assaulted minors "at drug parties." In 2021, the Justice Department opened an investigation into Gaetz over alleged cash payments made in exchange for sex, including to an underage girl.

The department in 2023 dropped charges against Gaetz after prosecutors said there were credibility issues with two key witnesses. He is still under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Gaetz responded to Gonzales’ Sunday comments in a post on X, accusing him of lying and calling on voters to support his GOP opponent. Gaetz has repeatedly denied the allegations.

I think Tony being flush with campaign cash is making him bold. If Gonzales can win his primary by appearing more "moderate", he will increase his odds in November. He's in a primary runoff against a guy known as "AK Guy Brandon". Brandon is crazy. His career: He's a youtuber with a gun channel. Brandon has no job. His only "job" was running a gun store. He's not even from Texas. He lived in NC and came all the way to Texas just to run for congress. The GOP is unhinged.

6. Rep. Tony Gonzalez was censured by the Texas Republican party and they won't help with fundraising.

His "crime"? Voting to restrict guns in any way after the Uvalde school shooting. The navy veteran and San Antonio Republican's district includes Uvalde.

Great to hear him speaking up. If he survives the runoff in his primary, he will fact the Democratic nominee, Santos Limon.

7. Sadly, Limon doesn't stand a chance, even against Brandon. I read his LWV post. Full of misspellings, bad grammar..

Limon even puts "la cucaracha" music on some of his FB posts. Any GOP voters who might be repelled by Brandon, will likely won't be able to bring themselves to vote for Limon. Wish John Lira would have thrown his hat in the ring again. (Lira was a good candidate, but unfortunately didn't have much of a campaign).
