11 indicted in Arizona 2020 election probe

Source: ABC News

April 24, 2024, 7:29 PM

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has announced charges against 11 alleged fake electors, the office announced in a press release on Wednesday, for their alleged role in a scheme after the 2020 presidential election. The charges include fraud, forgery, and conspiracy. Several of the names have been redacted, but Mayes said those names will be unredacted when "all defendants have been served."

Arizona becomes the fourth state to file criminal charges against the so-called "fake electors" who allegedly announced they were ready to pledge electoral votes to Donald Trump in their respective states during the 2020 election, despite Joe Biden winning those states.

Eleven Republicans met in Arizona in December 2020, including then-Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward, two Republican lawmakers, and a top official with the Republican National Committee, and signed documents that falsely claimed they were Arizona's rightful electors.

"Today, Arizona's 11 Republican presidential electors met to cast their votes for President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence," the Arizona GOP tweeted in December 2020. "With ongoing legal challenges to the 2020 presidential election still being heard in the courts across the country holding hearings on election fraud and voting irregularities, it is imperative that the proper elections are counted by Congress."

Arizona prosecutors file criminal charges over 2020 election subversion schemes

Published 7:21 PM EDT, Wed April 24, 2024

CNN -- A grand jury in Arizona has handed up an indictment against former President Donald Trump's allies over their efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, including the fake electors from that state and several individuals connected to his campaign.

Boris Epshteyn, a former White House aide who remains one of Trump's closest advisers, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Rudy Giuliani are among those who have been indicted, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Breaking all over.

I changed the source because CNN was taking too long to get more details but ABC had more.

Chesebro got that by doing a plea deal. If they refuse to plead out and go to trial, I expect the consequences are much higher.

And he has been less than honest with MI and NV prosecutors, so his slap on the wrist in GA may turn into something more serious.

Interesting that he wasn’t among those indicted today.

Very interesting.

Truthfully, unless he can tie Trump directly to scheme, don’t think he’ll be much help. And that’s assuming it makes it to trial in a timely manner.

There’s no way he acted without Trump’s knowledge and approval.

The question is, will he cooperate truthfully, or risk jail time, possibly in multiple states, without any chance of presidential pardon?

TFG and Cheeseboro are unindicted co-conspirators.

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/04/24/arizona-election-indictments-giuliani-meadows-trump-00154241

An Arizona grand jury has indicted 18 allies of Donald Trump for their efforts to subvert the 2020 election — including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, attorney Rudy Giuliani and former Trump campaign operative Mike Roman.

The indictment, which includes felony counts of conspiracy, fraud and forgery, also describes Trump as an unindicted co-conspirator.

“Defendants and unindicted coconspirators schemed to prevent the lawful transfer of the presidency to keep Unindicted Coconspirator 1 in office against the will of Arizona’s voters,” the 58-page indictment reads.

The names of seven of the defendants, including Meadows, Giuliani and Roman, are redacted, but the document makes clear who they are by describing their roles. Ken Chesebro, an attorney who helped devise Trump’s post-election strategy, is described as “unindicted coconspirator 4.”

The only defendants whose names are visible in the version of the indictment released by the Arizona attorney general’s office Wednesday evening are the 11 Republicans who falsely posed as the state’s presidential electors despite Joe Biden’s narrow victory there. Among them: former Arizona GOP Chair Kelli Ward, state senators Jake Hoffman and Anthony Kern, and Arizona’s RNC committeeman Tyler Bowyer.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, has been helming the aggressive investigation. Though she initially appeared to be focused primarily on the false electors, in recent months she issued a wave of subpoenas to figures in Trump’s national orbit.

This will be fun to watch

She wasn't for the GA case (unless she was an unindicted co-conspirator) and I don't think she was for MI.

Glad to see this. These schmucks denied all of the people of AZ their choice in the General Election.

I would be disappointed to see this treated as just another white collar corporate crime. This is against the country's tenets.

Lawyers for these lawsuits must be very expensive and many of these people are already ensnared in other cases.
If they win does anyone reimburse them so the lawyers can get paid?
I’m sure they aren’t all multi-millionaires with an inexhaustible income.
Why would lawyers take these complex cases if all their time is paid out of their own pockets?
I don’t get it.
